Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

I didn’t really get this beer. Just had a very dry earthy aroma. Flavor was dry and earthy as well. Both were very mild. Just wasn’t a whole lot there, was looking for more.

Bottle. Aroma of caramel malt, fruit and mineral hops. Dark murky brown amber hue with an average sized off-white head that mostly diminished and left some lace. Flavor is of caramel malt, orange zest, mineral hops. Palate is medium-full bodied and oily soft. A good strong ale with some nice hops but the mineral presence once again detracts from the overall impression.

500ml bottle Bought from Tesco in NI; poured with a clear gold hue accompanied by very little head presence. Aroma is all hop...the Fuggle is definitely there and the dry-hopping is evident. It has a rich flavour that begins with the hop bitterness then makes a transition to alcoholic maltiness (reminding me of some of the stronger festive lagers in Germany). I don’t get much of the fruity flavour but this is a splendid ale.

[500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s, Reading] Pours a beep amber-bronze, with a large, frothy and rather ugly beige head which quickly diminishes. Moderate carbonation. Lovely huge wafts of malt - smells like an Adnams beer. Malt is also dominant in the taste at first with some orange sweetnes in there, before being obliterated by a slightly-too-bitter-in-comparison aftertaste. Despite the bitterness, this is a pleasant and easy-to-drink beer, but lacks depth for something of this strength. It might smell good enough for Adnams, but the taste isn’t quite there!

Bottle 500ml, 16 P
Appearance: Pours deep lively, cloudy, unpasteurized, living and fermented body, with very lively carbonation reminding of a wheat, yeasty ale. What is really amazing and surprising is that despite the fact that the carbonation is really very lively, it is only natural with no artificial carbonation, very well fermented and naturally effervescent. Looks thick and full bodied, the head after you pour the beer is not big but firm, regularly structured and almoust completely lasting. Head is off white in colour with some shades of orange and light beige. Lacing is fair to medium.
Aroma: Very hoppy on the top, freshness of hops is kicking your nose, orange, citrusses, lime, cask wood, a hint of sauerkraut, carrot, fermented fruits, winy character, very mature and strong aroma of fermentation, juicy exotic fruits, mango, molasses, raisin, old perfumes being out of date, resin, a hint of yeasts, generally accidic aroma, port wine, maple syrup, curdled milk, cucumber, very well blended aromas and perfectly balanced, complex and multidimentional.
Flavour: Accidic, sour, like sauercraut or cucumber fermented water, dry, no sugar note at all, hints of orange and banana from the lively fermentation of yeasts corelating with the lively and harsh carbonation tickling your tongue. You can really feel the beer in a way like you are touching something lively with your tongue. Than what comes is hoppy nose, alcohol is hidden somewhere between those planty unusual tastes, tangy, orange juice, fermented yeasts, cask wood wallnuts essence. Finish duration is average.
Palate: Body is medium, texture is tangy, accidic and dry, carbonation is lively on palate, finish feel is accidic and astringent.
