Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.

Hoppy flowery aroma. Hazy golden amber color and medium lacy sticky head. Sweet malty with generous flowery hops. Overwhelming dry hop finish. Balanced and original. Good beer

Bottle. Copper, small beige head, low bead. Grapefruit, earth, leaves on the nose. Oily texture. Not very vibrant orchard fruits. Hop bitterness is not at all biting, but is persistent. As is often the case for me with these sorts of beers, this mainly reminds me of how much better its lighter cousins are near home poured from the cask. But it’s pretty good.

A fabulous beer with a bit a dig. An ideal refreshment after a hard day at work. The ale has real gravity and bite, but too many in one session is not recommended!

Bottle, Tesco. Fine copper coloured crisp, yet slightly sweet beer. Despite the move of brewery, it has retained its papery tang and citrus notes. A high quality BCA, with good carbonation and a nice bitter, peppery finish.

Deep amber colour witha lovely malt driven aroma. very clean flavours with malt and well balanced hops. A very enjoyable English beer, one of my favourtie from Wells and Young’s stable of fine ales.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber-golden with a firm off-white head. Good lacing. Crisp pine hop aroma with faint metallic notes mucking about in the background. Malty notes as it warms. Flavour is crisp pine hops with malt in the background. Bitter hop finish. Nice. 22-10-09.

500ml bottle from First Choice liquor stores. Appears in a pint glass as a translucent amber beer with a medium white head that provides decent lacing. The nose is malty with a floral/herbal hops and a whiff of alcohol. The palate is multi-layered and complex with flavours of marmalade, dried apricots, peaches and rich malts before finishing with a big peppery hop presence that lingers. Nicely smooth and drinkable with the ABV well hidden. A top class bottle-conditioned ale.
