ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Jun 7, 2005 Old bottle (2001 or 2002 perhaps?) provided by OldGrowth at his tasty BBQ on 5/28/2005. A cloudy, pale yellow/white gold beer, with a smattering of creamy white head that recedes quickly to cover, with no lacing. Still quite a good amount of carbonation rising up in the glass. Aroma: Wow, this is definitely the oldest American wheat beer I’ve tried. The nose is fantastically sour, with a huge wheat twang, yet there is a creamy vanilla and oats-like note mixed in as well, just faintly sugary. Light lemon notes are not overdone. The wheat and yeast interplay is highly aromatic though, and I would be kidding if I didnt think, for a second, about lambics, after smelling this. Flavor is sour as well, with a wheat dryness, light vanilla cream and grainy malt notes. Quenching sourness, with a slightly oxidized/loose body, but still enough carbonation to give a good texture on the tongue. Lightly acidic, but there is still some honeyish nature in this (and that odd creaminess). Finishes with a lemon and wheat flavor that lingers nicely. Thanks Tom! Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Apr 14, 2004 Color is that of pure spun gold, beneath a prodigious, delicate white head that fills half the glass, before slowly, softly crumbling, leaving lace.
Nose: sparkling and lively, lemon zest and a hint of spice, distinctive and just a little complex.
Nice hoppy dance on the tongue, but any previous promise leaves off here, for the body is small, the texture is thin, and I find this weizen lacking a lot. Doesn't give the mouth and tongue anything to work with...
Nonetheless, it goes down smooth and light, does it's job in that regard, and I'm yearning for a lawn to mow.
Reid (991), Salem, Oregon, USA Nov 30, 2003 Comes in an amber coloured bottle (12oz) with a nice 1930s almost Bauhaus type simplistic label.
Nice enough appearance to this wheat..hazy straw coloured with an absolutly massive frothy pure white head.
Smell is very strong and very sour ..I like this in a wheat..good stuff.
taste though while nice is rather onbe dimensional..the sour ness..its not bad though..finishes fast..with little after taste.
Pretty nice on the tongue.
Quite drinkable ..a nice American hefe
Ma_Beer (421), Leominster, Massachusetts, USA Sep 23, 2003 Very citrusy (grapefruit) aroma and flavor. Some yeasty flavor as well. Light and drinkable, but certainly not the best Wheat I've had. OldGrowth (1269), Cary, North Carolina, USA Aug 16, 2003 Bottle: Citrus lemon nose with hint of corriander. Hazy orange yellow color. Small amount of sediment. Poured with kinda big head, settled down and left a thin lacing top. Again coriander, citrus taste. Typical wheat finish maybe a creamy. then a little hop bitterness creep back at you. Not my usual kinda beer. Tasty enough.
