Rastacouere (5409), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Dec 26, 2005 A slight off-brown head covers the blackish gloom. The seemingly typical Flatbread sweetness works particularly well in here, offering a brown sugar and floury medley that beef up the powdery roasted malts and cast a pinch of anise undertones. Unsurprisingly sweet and malty mouth presence reminds of oatmeal, molasses all going through a considerable roastiness. Not so thick as I first thought, medium bodied with a soft carbonation. The bottom line is that this beer seems to take all the house strengths to pack them up together in one beautiful package. CaptainCougar (4664), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 25, 2005 Pours a rich opaque black with dark brown edges and a thick tan head. Aroma is sweet, caramely and very roasty. Body starts rich, robust and sweet with nice dark fruit hints and lots of roasty notes. Finishes dry and crisp, slightly warming. A decently balanced, complex foreign stout. muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Apr 19, 2005 Draft pint at the brewpub. Completely opaque inky evil black with a tiny brown head that fades into a whisper of haze...sweet espresso-covered chocolate nose, just a bit of sherry...dried fruits, especially prunes, through the lightly vinous body, full and quite roasty, just a touch of chocolate and alcohol, generally very dry towards the finish. MartinT (4377), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 5, 2005 Updated: Apr 16, 2007The Lure: Vinous fruitiness and chocolatey malt sweetness unite for a pleasant stout aroma. Its Foreign Stout origins are obvious, though never exaggerated, but cola spiciness tends to reign on the parade.
The Festivities: Slick malty cereal are a meal by themselves, creating a slippery mouthfeel. Chocolate-covered grapes benefit from some surrounding late bitterness. That cola spiciness reappears in the shadows. An interesting brew, to style, but not branching out into excellence as I would expect some of this brewer’s beers to do.
Transcendence: Climbing to the roof to see further, but not quite there yet. tiggmtl (4179), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 22, 2005 Roasted malt and cocoa aroma with strong notes of liquorice and nutty sweetness. Opaque black body with a low brown head that recedes to cover. Grapey notes are strong in the dark malt flavour with plenty of roasted malts and liquorice apparent. Sweet and roast are nicely balanced on the tongue especially in the lasting finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation and smooth texture. Sampled on tap at the brewpub with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, muzzlehatch, Rastacouere and Yowie.
