MartinT (4307), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 4, 2007 My Bottom Line:
Bready tones and caramel sweetness dominate this underhopped Schwarzbier. Its roasty finish does cut some of the sugary aspects, but it eventually disappoints due to its lack of crispness and balance.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the dark brown/black.
-These guys’ pilseners are so good, I admit I was expecting something a lot better from this one.
-Body is well fed, and the effervescence pleasurable.
-Caramelized onions are evoked by a wandering mind; this maltiness soon gets limp.
From the growler at the Mondial de la Bière. jjpm74 (2878), Connecticut, USA Sep 5, 2006 On draught at American Flatbread. Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Smells nutty with some creamy malt. Tastes of biscuits, nuts and chocolate with a light peppery finish. Nice. muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Aug 16, 2006 Draught pint at the brewpub. Very dark, near-black and near-opaque yeasty-thick molasses with a small undying tan head.....disappointingly low-strength aroma, roasty and a touch sour and grapy, grows a bit and adds a touch of burnt chocolate with warmth but really never rises above weak and ordinary....on the tongue, strong, prickly carbonation, strongly vinous and lactic characteristics at first, then nutty and buttery with some warmth, roasty towards the finish....a bit too grapy and acidic overall, but it’s drinkable and not horribly out of place.
