| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2005 500 ml bottle, via rudolf. Dark brown, almost black pour with a small but firm light brown head that faded to a thin ring within a minute. Roasted malt nose with ample alcohol and some licorice, soy, burnt wood, and vanilla. Very roasty and dry burnt malt flavor, some alcohol in the finish with bitter coffee, soy, and charred oak. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, but with very fine bubbles preventing an overly fizzy texture. This beer perplexes me, not really sure if I kinda like it or really like it. My opinion fluctuated many times as I made my way thru the bottle. By the end I think it’s a well made beer that I didn’t really enjoy drinking that much. Perhaps just bad timing, I’d certainly be willing to try it again. Bart (1648), Brussels, Belgium

The aroma is smokey and very sweet - roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark dried fruits, brown sugar...with some alcohol cutting through it to mellow it out. Nice and creamy, it’s rife with the flavors from the nose but never gets overpowering into the sweet side. Mainly because of the alcohol, present in every stage of the drinking process. Very nice.

Very pleasing aroma of plums, rum raisin, sweet black cherries, dark chocolate, bold red vinous notes, and earthy hops. The flavor leads with some acceptable oxidation and light butterscotch backed up by roasted figs and raisins, soil, generous amounts of oaky and piney hops, and hints of root beer. Ample bitterness with some balancing sweetness. This has great depth and makes an excellent fireside beer. stouby (1944), Holbaek, Denmark

Dark brown with large light brown head, mostly lasting, fine lacings. Aroma moderate malty (smoke, brown sugar, roasted, chocolate, coffee). Flavor moderate sweet with a fine bitterness behind the sweetness. Medium body, soft carbonated, oily. The alcohol is felt, but not too much. Very soft and smooth and truly delicious. A perfect winter companion!

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 6, 2005 Bottle. Pours a muddy/ruby color into my tall lager glass. A big aroma of alcohol and bready, roasty malts fills my awaiting nostrils on first whiff. There is something very sweet in this brew, and I am taken aback with big flavors of woody chocolate and warming alcohol. A slight toffee, and fruity after flavor leaves feeling like I could drink another, and I will.......
