Tolly Cobbold

The Cobbold brewery was founded around 1723 in Harwich, with the original Cliffe Brewery being built 1746 in Ipswich - this was rebuilt in 1894. Cobbold & Co. merged with Tollemache’s Breweries Ltd. in 1957 to become Tolly Cobbold. The company was taken over by the shipping and brewing group Ellerman Lines in 1977, then sold to Brent Walker in 1989 and the brewery closed, with production transferred to Camerons Brewery in Hartlepool. However, the management bought back the brewery and reopened in 1991 in the Cliff Brewery, but utilising a small, modern brewing plant. Ridleys bought and closed the brewery in 2002, production moving to Chelmsford. In 2005 Ridley’s was bought by Greene King.
