growler

A container used to transport beer for off-premise consumption primarily used in Australia, Canada and the United States. The glass growler was first introduced by Otto Brother’s Brewing Company in 1989.

In Germany many brewpubs use:

- 1-liter straight bottles, strong, cheap, brown glass, with swing top closure, that are filled using a counter-pressure system;

- 2-liters jugs, amphora shaped, usually including brewery branding, glass embossing and even metallic handles; they are usually made of brown glass, and sometimes of ceramic or white painted glass; they use a jar-type closure; they tend to be quite expensive; these are filled using the counter-pressure system and more rarely directly from a tap;

- 3-liters jugs exist but are more rare to find.
