We don’t allow alternative dry hopping for the reason that puzzl mentions, but we have always allowed beers in where there is a difference in the beer that is clearly marked by the brewer. This was kept out because it wasn’t commercially available. There’s no hate here, but there is a desire to maintain consistency.

Seriously...how do you contradict yourself in the same post? First you state that there was a "marked recipe change and the beer was made commercially available" then you state that "this was kept out because it wasn’t commercially available." How can we be consistent if you can’t even keep your post consistent?

He didn’t contradict himself. He’s saying that NOW there is both a marked recipe change AND it is commercially available, whereas before it was not considered commercially available.

Good gracious. This kind of stuff is why beer geeking has burned me out. Who the FREAK cares if it is a new rating or not? If you want to rate it differently, then type up your daggone rating and paste it into your existing one. If it becomes its own rating, then you can put your rating under it. Either way you get to rate it.

LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG SIGH!

when did they switch brands?its been ryan bros. as long as i can remember?(not debating, just asking)

Maybe I’m wrong here? Was it the Dark Lord one that changed?
Didn’t Speedway have some sort of recipe change about 2-3 years ago?

Single hop beers are one of the exceptions to the single ingredient change rule since it is such a major ingredient. I suspect that if someone made a single malt beer and then switched from 100% pale malt to 100% black patent malt, it would probably qualify as a new beer as well.

yeah maybe it was dark lord idk.
but for some reason when you add vanilla beans to a beer its a recipe change.

thumbs up
About a year ago they started roasting in house, I believe with a different brand of coffee.

fast forward a month from now when the beer either is on RB or isn’t and this discussion will look pretty pointless. please be patient and let josh look this over. 11/5/2009 10:51:31 AM

This is a perfect example with small recipe teaks like swapping out an ingredient in a recipe - nobody is really sure if and what was changed. Does Speedway still use Ryan Brothers coffee? Is it brewed in house or not? When was the change made? If the beer geeks can’t figure this out on the #5 top rated beer on the site, then how can we expect to keep the other 100,000 beers straight? And how is someone less geeky than us supposed to know where to put their rating if there are a bunch of variations for the bottle they just picked up at the store. That’s why the rule on creating new beers says simple ingredient changes do not constitute a new beer.

Now back to this specific shit storm. In this case it will be clear to people that they are drinking this specific version of Speedway and they will be able to keep the ratings straight. I am guessing that is one of the reasons that Oakes said he would consider this case. All of our discussion is really a cow’s opinion (moo point).

I think all you guys should spend some time here in Utah, then would have something to complain about vs nitpick about something as freaking stupid as this thread has been. Seriously, enough already it is only a f*cking beer. 11/5/2009 11:28:29 AM
