I don’t know about NY, but CT distributors and retailers have both been thinking of scaling back what they carry because they have been losing money on a lot of the expensive beers.

Based on what I see here in Chicago, that sounds like a $10 markup on a lot of those beers. Maybe they think, if it won’t sell for $20, maybe it will for $30. The Wintercoat you mentioned goes for less than $15, and I want to say less than $10...

I have to drive way upstate to find anything close to the prices you’re enjoying in Tampa. Then again, if I wasn’t such a cold weather person, I’d move to Tampa in a heartbeat. The standard of living is better than it is here, even with the housing collapse. 10/21/2009 8:39:21 PM

Unless I’m confusing it with another beer, I’m pretty sure B. United who are the importers of that beer paid $12 a bottle for it. If you’re seeing it for less than $15, someone’s taking a loss on it or trying to unload it.

Most of those prices you mentioned are pretty damn high for those beers.

Nah. Julios near Boston still has tons of Angel’s Share @ $30/750, and I have a feeling they will be there for a very, very long time. All the geeks who know/care about the beer have already tried it and know it isn’t worth even close to $30, and the other random drinkers who are just buying whatever will see the long line of other LA beers sitting right next to AS all in the $10-15 range and won’t even consider the expensive one.

Whatever, that has nothing to do with the thread really.

Back on topic, I don’t know if the expensive bottles are "hurting" the industry but I just think they are a dead end. People always say well wine is that expensive and it’s fine, well, beer isn’t wine. People have embraced the hobby because it provides an approachable, affordable gateway to imbibing (unlike wine and liquor). I know few if any beer people who make big money (unlike many wine people). Outside of the beer geeks there are simply not enough people who will drop $30/bottle. Unless it is rare sour stuff I feel like $20 is the absolute ceiling.

Hell, it used to be that geeks would bitch about $10 bottles and then $15 but we’d still buy them. But I don’t see that anymore. Now we bitch about $20 bottles and $30 bottles and many of us *don’t* buy them. If *we* aren’t buying them, who will?

The Atlantic IPA was released recently for $30/12oz, which I think is the cause of a lot of the sudden concern. It’s been a sticker shock for everyone who has seen it (especially after reading about the beer for so long), and frankly I’m amazed anyone has bought it at that price.

I think most of us figured the beer would be very rare and would get a limited, brewery only type release. Instead it’s had limited stock sent all over the US, albeit at an outrageous price. I can’t say I’m a fan of that move, but they are a business so they can do what they want. That said, the brewer posted a few weeks ago that his beer was too expensive in this country (talking about Tokyo and their regular line) and that he’s changed distributors to fix the problem, but then goes ahead and pulls this move. What’s the deal?

If you get a hankering to move and still want some mildly cold weather
go to Atlanta or any city in North Carolina. Cheaper to live there, better beer scene and WAY cheaper beer. If I weren’t otherwise anchored here I’d very much consider moving to North Carolina.

Yeah, I guess beer prices don’t have anything to do with this thread.
