  ey Everyone,
I’m interested in traveling to Belgium for 3-4 days next week. I’ll be taking the train there from Germany, and won’t have access to a car. Also, in the interest of saving money, I’ll probably be confining myself to one city/local area. Is Brussels my best bet if I don’t have a car? Or does anyone have any advice on how to best approach a quick trip to Belgium given my car situation? Thanks in advance for your help.

We did well based in Brussels with no car. It was an easy train ride to Antwerp, Drie Fonteinen, DHVL, Ghent.

Agreed. No car is necissary.
Brussels and Antwerp are both easy to travel without car.

Definitely do Brussels. Get yourself a Eurail pass for the time that you’re there and you’re pretty much good to go. Like jerc said, there are plenty of places within easy reach by the train. Enjoy!

From Brussels, Brugge, Ghent, and Antwerp are all a short (and cheap) train ride away. And all are well worth visiting (although maybe hard to do it all in 3-4 days).
If you’re set on staying in just one city the whole time (but seriously, the train is so easy and distances so small that there is no need to), I personally wouldn’t pick Brussels. I found all of the previously mentioned cities much more interesting, (YMMV). Have fun planning your trip, it’s a great country (full of great beer!)

Brugge and Ghent would be a better way to spend 4 days in my opinion. Brugge is far, but if you are willing to go all the way to Brussels, it isn’t much farther on the train.
I would sleep in Brugge and do Ghent on a day trip.
Ghent is lit up on Saturday night...

I think my next trip to Belgium, I will do just the opposite. I love Bruges but every time I go its very crowded and forget it during the Christmas markets. Ghent on the other hand is almost a carbon copy of Bruges but quiet and sleepy. I do love sleeping close to the ’t Brugs Beertje. I don’t think you could go wrong either way. Dammit now I want to go back.

I went in March. Good weather, no crowds.
Anyway, a guy could have a good vacation with:
1 day in Brussels;
1 day in Ghent
2 days in Brugge.
