I will be staying in the city center, looking like I will be a free man for the day.

Anybody want to meet for a beer?
Or have a suggestion on where to go (no car though)

Nope. I flew through Vienna on the way in, but just ran through the airport

There are plenty of very nice beerbars at walking distance in city center.

I was there earlier this month, and I walked to all the bars, so you’ll be fine without a car. My favorite places in the centre of town were Hops Beer Bar and Legfelsőbb Beeróság, which both had a heavy focus on Hungarian micros, which was what I was looking for.

A little further away was Élesztő, where the beers were generally of better quality, so that is certainly worth a visit, if you don’t mind a little walking.

Eleszto is definitely worth a stop. Jonas is right behind Great Market Hall so convenient from a tourist perspective, with a gorgeous view of the Danube from their patio. Jonas is on the way from the center of Pest to Elesto, so sort of a fun sequence.

Some of the bars in the ruin pub district have some decent beer as well. Hungary also has a lot of very good and unique indigenous grape varietals, so if you like good wine check out places like Kadarka or some of the classy wine bars near Saint Istvan Basilika.

Don’t forget to try the palinka. To be traditional, you can have somebody shoot it into your mouth from an animal-skin bottle from across the room.

I have had PLENTY of Suica, which is the same thing as Palinka. My pipes have been well cleaned by that stuff, in fact I have a small plastic bottle of it in my suitcase for transport back to the US>
