I thought they were having to expand the brewery to keep up with demand, not having to expand distribution to keep up with current production?

confused

A bit surprised to see this too.. especially there instead of say, Atlanta?

Y’all need to STFU. wink

Yes the Florida market is saturated with CCB. The Cigar City guys have grown tired of giving away their beer since no one will buy it. They figured they would turn to other states to unload the beer on unsuspecting beer geeks.

In my opinion they should turn to ratebeer members for marketing advice. Maybe the all knowing here can help turn around this fledgling business. eye roll

Why the hate? It’s a serious questions I thought about bringing up. Grow in your city ---->state ------> surrounding states -----> etc. Why hop over a bunch of potential beer markets? Grow your brewery to meet demand as well (New Glarus, Three Floyds anyone?). Make sure you are able to meet that AND continue with excellent QC. Etc. Etc. Etc.

I just don’t see why a company that’s already stretched thin in it’s own local area would expand so far away, especially in its infancy with tons of kinks and growing pains no doubt in the future. I’d like to hear if it’s some sweet partnership or what the deal is.

PS if CC needs a sales rep in the phili area, get at me cheers!

What is it about PA that they get stuff like this? Russian River skips over every state to distribute to PA, so I’m seeing a pattern here. Is the distributor there particularly savvy? 10/30/2009 4:32:21 PM

Personal connections maybe? I know that is why Alesmith gets all the way to Ohio.

When reading pepsican’s comment the first thing I think of is Alesmith.

In some cases the distributor makes it amazingly easy on the brewery. How can they say no?

Let me put it this way. NY got it because they made it easy to say yes and a fellow RBerian who I’d met and liked asked for the beer.

PA got it because they pretty much make it so that not selling it to them would be a dumb business decision. And our PA distributor knows full well how to maximize the advantages they have. Kudos to them. If you live in PA or NY be happy you have such a mature craft beer market with distributors that work hard to get the brands they want to get. Our two northern distributors have beer geeks manning the helms and they understand the challenges smaller breweries face.

Going into new states requires a lot of paperwork that the brewery has to fill out and babysit through. Same deal in NY and PA, but the distributors do all the leg work. And in many other ways they make it so that you literally have no reason to say no. Plus you get a lot of tourists in FL from those geographical areas and there is synergy there. Then too Saint Somewhere (Bob’s a guy I respect on many levels) has dealt with some of the same people and had good things to say.

All of that being said CCB won’t be opening new markets again for a good while but when we do, it will be with a southeast focus and as far as GA goes we’ll go into GA when Sweetwater comes into central and south Florida! Just kidding GA is top of the list as soon as we get the rest of FL covered.

So nice to see I spawned this type of dialogue. By the way, it was not the cedar aged Imperial Stout I picked up at Capone’s, it was the regular Imperial Stout. My wife and I just opened the Improvisacion. Very Nice stuff.

I can’t wait to try the Cigar City brews on draft next week. We are very lucky here in PA! I can understand why people think it is unfair that PA gets access to so many great brews. However, I don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
