What I’m wondering is why nobody’s yet bitched about it being 2 oz less than two bottles, but about $3 more now.

I was about to post the same thing but deleted it after I wrote it. This is among my favorite bourbon-barrel-aged Imperial Stouts, so I’m pretty unhappy about the switch as well as the deception (in regards to packaging it in 22 oz. form and charging considerably MORE for LESS beer) on Goose Island’s part.

Don’t know when the last time I drank a bomber of 13% Imperial Stout, so I won’t be buying more than one bottle. I would have purchased a case of 12 oz. bottles (if this batch is a stellar one).

The whole trend of less-for-more (including 4-packs) is very unsettling to me. Not only because they’re now harder for me to afford personally, but because there will eventually become a point of saturation in the market. At this point, people (the new, emerging beer-curious public) will simple stop buying the products because they’re too expensive and not a good perceived value.

My local package stores are already struggling with brands they can’t sell, seasonals they need to hold over two seasons too long and vintage-dated stuff that’s from last year or the year before. Invariably, the market will dictate they purchase less and less from the distributors of these products. And I know at that point, the prices should go back down to meet falling demand, but that seems a hard way to learn a lesson.

Anecdotally, the first time I ever bought BCS (’05), was from a friend who’d bought me a case on spec - I told him to get me as much as he could afford and bring back. When I found out it was $200+/case, I actually had to leave him in the lurch for all but a few 4-packs...I felt terrible, but simply didn’t know it was that expensive. Now, at $6+/bottle, I allocate funds specifically for this beer and only buy what I can afford...because it’s one of all time favorites. But how long will it be before I simply can’t afford more than one or two bottles for my yearly allotment?

Brooklyn BCS is another example. It just concerns me some.

DOUBLE THAT BROTHER ON WHAT THE FUCKunamusedAND IN BOMBERS ON TOP OF IT. GOOSE ISLAND HAS JUMPED ON THE BOMBER BAND WAGON. FUCK THATconfusedunamused

+1 All that means is that the price for Goose Island to package and ship the beer went down, yet the price per unit volume for the consumer went up 50%. And now if you want to cellar any to see how it ages, it’ll cost you three times as much as it would’ve before. I really hope they haven’t stopped doing the 12oz bottles. Maybe I should buy a keg and a counter-pressure filler and bottle my own.

And why the hell do breweries keep putting their highest alcohol beers in their largest bottles, when the have the capability of bottling in different sizes? At least Stone and Great Divide have at least starting offering multiple size formats for some of their beers in the past few years. Now if only places like Southern Tier, Three Floyds, Troegs, Boulevard, New Holland, etc. would take note.

Word. I usually share a 12-ouncer. I’m keeping the faith that they’ll continue to bottle in the smaller format (didn’t someone already confirm that they’ve seen them this year?), but now I’m just worried that they might not distribute the 4-packs all the way out here in California.

I’m excited. I’m less tempted to crack a bomber from my cellar than a 12 oz. bottle. 10/31/2009 10:18:03 AM

Is that the normal price there, or did it go up in price?
I haven’t seen the prices here this year, but it’s usually ~20 for a 4 pack.

From what I understand it should be around $20-$21, but the store I likley will have to purchase from unfortunately likes to rake people across the coals. And BTW - this is the first time it will ever be available here.

Lets all chill a bit.
If they were only doing this in Bombers and I was paying $3 more for 2oz less I suppose I would be upset too. But it looks to me like the 12oz bottles not only exist but are featured prominently on the Goose Island Website. It’s silly that Goose Island is selling their beer in expensive bombers, but I respect that they’re not letting go of the four pack format that they’ve succeeded with in the past.
