was wondering if anyone had seen good articles on hop shortages recently and over the years. I know there are a million of them if you google it however it’s hard to pick the good from the bad. I’m doing a presentation so articles including solutions, raw data, graphs or charts would be greatly appreciated.

I just came across this yesterday when I was ordering from Hopsdirect
http://www.hopsdirect.com/files/files/2009NASSReport.pdf
I think overall worldwide there may still be a shortage, but I think this year the overall crop was up over 5%? I forget where I read that. Anyway, hop prices direct from Puterbaugh are down 50-75% from last year. Many hops are in the $9-$15/lb range (plus they sometimes overship on wieghts), whereas last year the same hops were going from $20-$35/lb depending on variety.

I received 1.5-2.5 extra ounces per pound when I ordered from there this year, which always sweetens the deal

before the hop shortage, they used to ship anywhere from 8-16 oz extra! And that was when price per lb was like $5-$8, so it turned out to be $2.50-$4/lb!!!! Crazyness.

Jim Koch gave an interesting talk about hops shortages and gluts at this years craft brewers conference. In short, price trends for hops are very cyclical since hops aren’t the most profitable crop, plantings are slow to meet demand, and you need a few years to get a good crop. So the market experiences spikes every 10-15 years. If you have access to any transcripts from that talk, there is a wealth of insight there. Jim really knows his hop economics.

A lot of hop farmers I have talked to have expanded their farms the past few years. My dad is a wine maker and one of his grape vendors ripped out some of his grape vines to plant hops. I think the price of hops is either going to stay the same or drop in the next few years. However I expect breweries to not decrease prices to make up for the lost profits form the past couple years.

craziness is that i used to trade an ounce of weed for an ounce of gold!!! and i was getting the short end of the stick!!! and i would then literally just vaporize the gold, thats why the price is so high now!!!
