Go out in your garden and catch some snails and frogs, sorted...
Make sure to wear a stripey shirt, a beret, a ring of onions around your neck and carry a baguette.

French cuisine is all about technique. Go to culinary school first.

Try egullet.com
Silky is correct, French cooking is about technique, but if you are reasonably comfortable in the kitchen, it is not that difficult to pick up the basics. Any particular region or style you are interested in?

OWNED!!
Very least buy "Joy of Cooking" .
Know what else is funny, so few people buy a decent saucepan and then learn how to control stove heat.
So many people think stoves have just ON and OFF heat settings. Don’t have time! Must boil everything! Must cook this quickly as possible! This destroys flavor, nutrition, and the valuable knowledge of how different heats affect the result.

actually, discovering on my own is much better, since I´m not doing anything professionally, you´d be surprised by what you can do with self believe and enthusiasm

Yep. And - seriously - Joy of Cooking for great general tips, and the basics of Bourgogne and Carbonnade, Coq au Vin, classic information.

Agreed. I have taught myself to do a lot of things, one of which is cooking at a pretty advanced level. Good luck!

And lest we forget the Internet. For every ’book’ recipe there are 150,000 variations to be found, so one can always make something with whatever ingredients you have access to, and really make a dish one’s own.
