Although the moving of the amounts to say 200 or 250 I think is a good idea, as long as peoples rating stayed for the other ones I couldn’t see that anyone one would be too bothered. But to be honest as much as I was having a little joke about some of those beers and the fact that to even have a sneaky glimpse of some of them you’ve got to sell your granny, well I would probably be someone who would seek out those beers on the odd occasion, maybe without the efforts and and expense that some do but its all about choice. The fact that there are brewers out there prepared to experiment and try different things is fantastic. If someone like yourself brews a good beer it will invariably make it into the top 50 it might just take a little longer, but it’ll get there.

There was this same type of thread for the two non-bottled versions of Dark Lord. The vanilla bean version was off and on a couple of times before someone spoke up and mentioned it was still selling at the brewpub.

Then there was the whole AleSmith debacle about the special coffee version of the Speedway stout. It finally got removed because only Americans had rated it, thus considered neither commercially available nor a new beer since the only change was coffee which is not allowed for American beers, either.

I see that American beers have more stringent requirements for new entries than the foreign ones. Just look at all of the British rebadges for every little tweak in recipe or serving method.

Im not trying to get the Two darklord removed. Its frustrating knowing that the chances of ever trying such highly regarded beers is non exisitant, but it still gonna be a beer i want to try once i know of its existance wether its listed now or not.

As for the Alesmith I followed that thread and never did quite understand what the postion on it was, there seemed to be so many claims and counter claims. It seemed to me legitimate but should have been retired as it was a one off never to be seen again release.

As for UK beers the problem there is Definitly the Brewers/distributers. Its next to impossiblt to know when its new or not, so you just have to go with the information supplied. It HATE the rebadge practice, and in fact came across one recently(christmas name) where i went hunting the beer , failing to find it. Only to discover it was one id had with its original name.
If i didnt like it first time im not going to like it with a new name, and if i did like it, i dont want to miss out cause its got a new name.

I think there a difference in the Bottle and Cask market, and the US seems to me more bottle lead and the UK cask lead.

A brewer in the bottle market want you to come back and back to the same bottle. A small percentage of the Cask market aims to get its beer into a pub on a regular basis, based on "look we have a new beer"

Oh and as for serving method. There no doubt in my mind there a huge difference in Cask and Sterile versions of beers.

Im assuming the same rules apply for cask and sterile in the US. Though im not sure how many brewers produce a Cask version.

It’s not on the website list;-). We have about 10 different Struise beers in the shop for the moment.

What beershop would that be? What is the URL to your website?

How odd.
Why?
I think we have it right. A living beer is completly different from a Sterile beer. Seems insane to lump them together. If they were the same id probably never bother with the Pub. But there something really nice about a UK Cask ale.

There a couple of UK casks that my wife loves but wont touch on Bottle at all.

Commercially available=available for public consumption. Not available at the brewery for a few select friends to try if you ask really nicely. That is called homebrew or an experiment.

How is the beer in question commercially available? What did I miss that makes this beer a ratable beer? I am curious since to the best of my knowledge, this beer has not been made available to the public. Not even at some local Belgian pub in the middle of nowhere.

Seem to me that Struises bigest problem is they didnt charge for some of these beers

Ive seen threads where they have held and open day at the farm, for any one to turn up and try the beers.

So they have been available to anyone who could make it to the farm on the day specifed.

That strike me as all thats wrong with America. WHY. Why sould a beer need US approval to ne a great Beer.

Feel free to add Criteria like that but make sure that all countires have teh same right. SO no beer can be in the top 50 till someone from every country has tried it.

Wait Craig I have had both beers in question and I am American. Oh wait it doesn’t count because I live in Germany and haven’t made 50 trades on rate beer. My opinion isn’t respected, LOL! This has been one of the best threads to read in a great long time....Shawn

It’s a complex situation. But the UK splits are not just by cask and bottle. The splits are by cask and pasteurised. That situation NEVER arises in the USA. In fact it only happens in the UK due to our peculiar brewery history. It doesn’t happen in the UK with most micro breweries either. I’m currently drinking a bottle of Wylam Rocket which is cold filtered so that is not split from the cask version.

Very few people understand how and why we split, so you are not alone. We would love to go further and split along filtered/unfiltered lines, but that is unlikely to happen.

As for the Stuise beer. From the ratings, I doubt if it’s a beer I would like, but I’m glad it has given so much pleasure to those who have drunk it.
