Cool, super jealous of you guys.
As puzzl mentioned this isn’t the end all and be all of what may be the best gueuze.
I just wanted to add that order of bees drank could have had an effect, how each rater was feeling that day, exactly how much discussion was going on as you were drinking the beers and whether that swayed raters’ opinions, etc. But I am glad you guys will continue this type of tasting.
What I really wonder if there was even a difference b/w the gueuzes.
The problem with the 1-9 system is that there is no measure of the magnitude of difference b/w the beers. For example, 1 an 2 could be really close together but the difference between 3 and 4 is drastic.
If we were able to standardize the RB scores and then average them out we may find that at the end all the beers (or at least some) were not significantly different. I actually find this to be true for my own ratings. A large majority of my gueuze ratings fall b/w 3.9 and 4.1 and if I cut out the appearance score it is probably even less of a difference. At that point I am probably assign higher scores based on rarity, company, environment, etc and not actual valence of the flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel. Basically, I like gueuze in most forms and any difference in ratings may be not be from that actual beer.
I wonder if you could post the RB scores for each rater then someone may volunteer to standardized those scores. Then we could averaged across raters. That may change the outcome.
Again, awesome stuff guys

A couple of them might have been for me, I’d have to check. I also like the idea of being able to put in quite unbiased ratings without any subliminal associations with the beer in question coming into the equation.

Good call. The two times I’ve done blind tastings, my ratings have been in a pretty large range and I tend to rate lower than I usually do. My range for the beers in question was 2.1-4.0.

I’ve got the raw scores here both ways (scores and rankings). I’m going to write it up with a few photos on my blog. I’ll post over here, once it’s done.
