Um... what’s the problem with old gueuze? The older the better (up to a certain point) and 2004 3F is a stonker; been drinking them for a few years and, if anything, it’s got a good 5 years before it peaks yet.

To say "unfortunately" before 3F 04 says to me you don’t grasp the whole lambic thing...

You clearly haven’t been reading the thread. We tried to do everything as fresh as possible so as to not bias one beer over any others based on age. That would be the best way to do a blind horizontal tasting, no?

ikea sells 6 packs of glasses perfect for this purpose for $2-5 a pack(depending on if you want wine glasses or smaller tasting style glasses)

I personally have a stock of the cheap $2/6pack ones, and while they may not be the ideal shape, they are the perfect size and durability for tastings, blind or not.. I use them for normal tastings when I don’t want to risk having my nice glassware broken

New York apartments aren’t conducive to storing tons of glassware... my wife gets pissed enough about the stuff I have.

I think he was saying it is "unfortunate" because they want all the bottles to be around the same age, not because he despises old or aged Gueuze. It would be "unfortunate" if one of the beers took the upper hand in a blind tasting because it was older.

pffff... I live in a 3000+ square foot house and that doesn’t include the basment. My wife still gets mad about all the glassware I have. It’s a wife thing, not a space thing.

MaxxDaddy and CanIHave4Beers are wrong. You are right. But to carry it further. . . I just cannot grasp the concept of beers in general. What is it with these "beers" and all of these "flavors" you guys speak of???

st louis: 0.61617183985605
oud beersel:0.56399010346379
50N4E: 0

Relatively close to just averaging RB scores (3F/Lindemans swap, Boon/Hanssens swap, St Louis moves down two), and almost the exact same as the original posted results using the 1-9 rankings.

Here is a link to view/edit the data, please don’t change anything on there unless there are mistakes, if you want to mess around with more data just populate some new fields.

The only other thing I can think of to try would be tossing the 50N scores entirely because they continue to skew the data, unfortunately I don’t know how to do a series thing in a spreadsheet where one reference scales and others dont.

In case anyone is curious, the formula to scale to a 0 to 1 score is:
=(SCORE - MIN) * (1 / (MAX - MIN)) where MIN and MAX are the minimum/maximum scores of the rater.

Bloody hell Andy! Are your numbers accurate enought there?

applause

sorry just copy and pasted from the spread sheet laughing

- Girardin Black Label
- Boon Oude Geuze
- Oud Beersel
- Hanssens
- Cantillon Classic
- Drie Fonteinen
- Lindemans Cuvee Rene

- maybe even Boon Marriage Parfait

. . . and we’ll probably also throw in a ringer or two.

We plan to do a structured blind tasting just like you had, and we’re getting the bottles as fresh as we can, but unfortunately the only Drie Fonteinen we’ve got is from 2004. We’ll have 2-ounce pours from standardized glassware and rate them to RB scoring standards and also use the "ranking" system you guys used.

And it’s worth noting (only because I’m super-nerdy about this kind of stuff) that while I’ll probably insist that we do the "two-by-two" tastings like you guys did (i.e. two at a time), a couple of guys have already requested that we pour ALL of the beers so they can compare and contrast across the line-up any which way they can. (I like doing this as well, especially for the "ranking" method of evaluation.) So we’ll probably have all of the beers poured before we’re completely finished with ANY of them, but we’ll start out by pouring two at a time for the initial impressions.

I’m really looking forward to this. Should be interesting to see how the results compare.

Where at? thumbs up

To say "unfortunately" before 3F 04 says to me you don’t grasp the whole lambic thing...

I think you may have missed a touch of sarcasm there mate.

Actually there was no sarcasm intended. We are actually afraid that the additional 5 years of age on the 3F will give it an unfair advantage over other 7 "fresh" gueuzes at this tasting.
