have a bottle of orval with one date written on it. the date is October something or the other in 1993. can anyone tell me if this is the bottling date or the best by date? if its the best by date, when was the bottling date? thanks.

I can’t tell you for sure as I’ve never seen a bottle that old, but the new bottles have a bottled on date AND a best by date and they are 10 years apart IIRC.

Either way, it’s time to open and drink that fucker.

The standard on lots of Belgian/Trappist/Abbey ales is that if there is a single date on the bottle that date is five years from when it was brewed. This is no definitive rule, and I really can’t speak specifically to Orval, JorisPPattyn is usually our man in regards to stuff like this so you might think about writing him. Either way that’s one sweet little bottle you got there could be an 88’... could be a 93’... Either way I’m going to agree with absolutesites here, time to crack that lil guy open. I hope it tastes good! 11/6/2009 2:30:41 PM

It’s a best before date and it’s 5 years later than the bottling date. 11/6/2009 3:28:37 PM

Hope it’s still good by the way. Had a seven year old one last Saturday and it was glorious. 11/6/2009 3:30:27 PM

Had a 20 year old Orval this year and it was past its prime, but still quite drinkable with honeyish and citrus notes. Enjoy! 11/8/2009 3:05:44 AM

Yeah . . . I checked the cellar after I posted and you, sir, are indeed correct.
