Small town shops, beaches, and so on. That’s more her speed. Too bad its about an hour away unamused

I really plan on going. Just need to come up with a way to sell it good to the wife. Business trip seems a little suspect since its over the weekend. She may be gullible. But not that gullible. I thinkhmmm...

Dude, if this were an hour away, it wouldn’t be an issue with me. I’d be there for sure. 1 hour is nothing and is what NYC would have been for me.

For me, this is almost the same cost travel wise as a trip to Belgium. Grand Rapids, when I showed it to my wife, remineded her of White Plains, NY and Hartford, CT. While I couldn’t spin this into something remotely interesting to her, I successfully sold her on hitting Belgium and the Czech Republic, so it looks like that’s where I’ll be that weekend. cheers!

You’ll be only a few hours to Canada. Come on over for some healthcare! 11/9/2009 8:20:58 PM

30-40 minutes from Grand Rapids is Grand Haven, a gorgeous beachfront town. Great shops, bed & breakfasts, very nice place. 11/9/2009 8:30:14 PM

Ill vouch that Saugatuck is a very nice town...arty, waterfront, cool restaurants and shopping. Tell your wife she can bring a friend and go hang out up there.

BTW, im still working on how I am going to go, not sure the wife will be that down with it. My whole family is in detroit, Im in Boston, and I dont think suggesting to the wife that she hang with my family while I go drink some heavenly beer on the other side of the state will fly

Grand Rapids is a short drive from Holland, Saugatuk, and Grand Haven which all have gorgeous beaches and state parks. Downtown Grand Rapids has some great museums, including a brand new and very nice Modern Art Museum. There are loads of nice restaurants. There’s lots of great reasons why one would want to visit the west side of Michigan in the summer. 11/10/2009 6:41:18 AM

Now, that said, how do I get a non beer drinking wife to want to go to something like this and leave the kids home (both under 6) for the weekend? We could leave the kids with family, but I’m pretty sure she won’t want to leave them for what she thinks is just another ’beer’ trip of mine. Which it is, btw excited

Any ideas?

Leave her home with the kids?

There are a bunch of places to shop around grand rapids, great restaurants, galleries, and great art and scultpure garden that is relatively close. Plus, with the proximity to the beach towns (40 minutes), there are quite a few options. 11/10/2009 9:28:06 AM

The Western Michigan Whitecaps will have a series in town that weekend. Whitecaps are a class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. 11/10/2009 10:57:51 AM
