get mildly annoyed, as a cheap beer dude, when I buy a beer thinking it’s something new, only to find I’ve already rated it under some other name.

The latest was Southamptom Altbier, I already tried it 2 times as Secret Ale. I don’t mind the AKAs, just stick with it. Don’t switch back and forth from name to name across the year.

What do you think about AKAs? Do you think it’s a beer selling gimmick? That’s how I feel about it.

i dont mind different name for different markets or a one of change, but almost anything else is dishonest. Trying to pass a beer off as something different. (eg rebading a beer for christmas though its no different) 7/6/2008 2:25:13 PM

Rogue - For the man who wants to appear to have a varied cellar, yet prefers to stick to the same taste in beer.wink 7/6/2008 3:36:51 PM

Maybe in this case they realized that "Secret Ale" was a dumb name.

In general though, I agree that it’s silly and nothing more than a sales gimmick.

I don’t know if non-alcohol counts but Labatt’s De-Alcoholized Blue is just a new name for the retired Labatt’s Nordic. Exactly the same stuff with a new label. 7/6/2008 5:14:13 PM

I think Secret Ale is a good name, but the reference (to "Sticke") may be too beer nerdy and esoteric. American beer drinkers may expect something different than what they get from a beer called "Secret Ale".

I picked up a few single bottles of White Crane Bitter (Dead Guy) this weekend just because they were 1.99 for 12oz.

It’s especially annoying when brewpubs only slightly "tweak" a recipe (or don’t), but name each and every batch of beer something different. How many really different red ales can one brewery make?? Naming it in honor of someone, a local cause, ... whatever. This does nothing but clutter the databases with one-offs that are the same beer as last week.

A good sign of this is when a "permanent" beer board has something generic like "Hefeweizen" or "Stout", but the up-to-date menu insert has the Hefeweizen or Stout given some catchy name of the week.

White Crane is re-badged Brutal Bitter, but to be fair those bottles were never intended for anywhere except Japan and Japanese restaurants.
