f there’s an easy way of searching, I don’t see it. There’s no special group to join and track (like the stouties, etc.). Anyone out there have Scotch Ale listed as their favorite style... other than me?

Let’s discuss!

I have been re-assessing my likes and dislikes as of late, and I’m in agreement with you. Scotch ales have become my favorite style. I might even change to Scotch Ale on my favorite style listing. It truly is an underappreciated style of beer in my opinion, and also very enjoyable…and what I mean by that is that (not that I have had hundreds of Scotch ales), but I could finish them all without the experience being completely awful (if I did not like the beer). I really can’t say that for any other style…some Impy stouts/IPA’s have been brutal to finish. Although, this is not to say there aren’t any awful Scotch ales out there, but over-all I think it’s an easier-drinking beer that can also be complex. 5/9/2008 9:15:08 PM

I’m with both of you. I also have struggled through many examples of other styles to avoid dumping them out. I’m stubborn and hate to pour beer down the drain.

At the same time, as much as I lovelovelove a good Scotch ale, it’s difficult to find good examples of the style. I’ll go a long, long time without tasting a truly nice Scotch ale, then suddenly I’ll stumble across something like an Alesmith Wee Heavy or Corne De Brume and POW!, I’m reminded why it’s my favorite style and why people continue to even brew it. thumbs up

Sort of the way I feel when I run across a good tripel

Here’s another freak for a good Scotch Ale.

One of the things I have found is that I can rarely go by the ratings of others to find the scotch ales that I like the most. I think a lot of people are not looking for the same things I am when they write a rating of a scotch ale.

P  DTM 324:7 Scotch ale’s are not my favorite, but I had the Alesmith Wee Heavy tonight and it instantly became one of my top 10 beers. I was blown away at the complexity of the flavors. 5/11/2008 12:48:22 AM

Duck rabbit WHSA is very similar if not better to alesmiths, LAst winter i had a side by side tasting with some friends and we were more impressed with DR. Might be some NC bias hmmm...

Love Scotch Ales! I’m always switching between Imperial Stouts and Scotch Ale as my favorite style. 5/11/2008 1:12:34 AM

Robert the Bruce is simple and straight forward, but magical. Not over-hopped like Three Floyds can be at times, even with malty styles. Just a bottle full of luxurious caramel malts with enough chocolate malt to keep things interesting! love

... or whatever it is they use to brew the stuff.

I am still very new to the scene, but can someone explain to me the difference between Scoth and Scottish Ales? Or is there a diference, and if so what are they? I have read the ratebeer styles, but that doesn’t explain much
