He’s at a store that sells beer. He’s advertising a beer being sold like all the others, but he won’t sell that particular beer. Maybe he thinks that keeping the Utopia on display like that will make his shop look a bit more prestigious than the others. But what do I know about Shawnee, KS?

Call up Goebel Liquors in Wichita. Talk to Rob if you can. They had some when I left in 2007, and it had been there for awhile, good chance its still there.

Take the $200 and go buy 4 bottles of Balvenie Doublewood and a few nice cigars, and then write the guy a thank you letter.

Pretty sure that just because something has a price tag on it, doesn’t mean they are obligated to sell it to you. Could be a case of "$200 to the right customer, and you aren’t him".
There’s a bottle of Utopias on the shelf behind the counter (visible to customers) but it’s not really for sale - belongs to the bossman, he just keeps it in plain sight. Now, that one’s not marked for sale (and does actually have a little sign saying not to touch or sell it), but sometimes there’ll be something else back there (again, visible to the customers), that isn’t for sale to them because it’s being held for a specific person, or only going to be sold to a select group of regulars.

I think the OP is describing a slightly different case. A case of cockiness.

Review it to let others know to avoid the place:

This thread will be gone and forgotten in a wee or so. The review will be there as long as the place exists in the site’s database for anyone to click on and read.

A beer store can refuse to sell any beverage in the store to anyone without a reason. It’s just hard to keep customers that way. I know a guy that refused to sell some beer to a customer because the customer started complaining that the price tag said another price (which it did, it was cheaper but no one got around to changing it). The customer said that by law he has to sell it at the advertised price. The he told the customer that he can refuse business to anyone and said "No beer for you then".

Maybe the guy behind the counter was not an owner, but an employee who has an open auction on ebay for that bottle. I once had an employee who wouldn’t sell a Sam Adam’s millennium I had on the shelf to someone. When the guy emailed me to complain, I took it off the shelf & held it for him. When my schmoe employee’s auction ended, he turned the store upside down looking for it. I asked what the problem was, and he wouldn’t say why he was panicking about it. I had checked ebay, and saw that his auction had ended at over $125 higher than I was retailing it for. I showed him the auction, his jaw dropped, and said "is this what you were looking for?" he lied, and was shown the door.
I have also had employees buy limited releases from the store when I was not there, only to sell them on ebay, or use them as trade bait. This is why all limited releases are handled with "blog only" announcements, so my regulars get the first shot. I generally do not even take a bottle for myself so my customers can get their hands on it. Some of those guys were canned as well.
As far as him holding it for someone, he should have put it away, or at least put a "sold" sign on it if that were the case.
Give the store a call. While the guy was probably just being a dick, there is that chance that an employee made him look bad. It has happened to me many times.
I don’t know the store or the guy, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.
