An american strong ale doesn’t have to be an imperial porter, but since we have so few of them on the site (cough faro cough), they do not give it its own classification.

No difference. As there is no Imperial Porter category and IPs are not Baltic Porters or Imperial Stouts, they are put in the catch-all ASA category. Not really a big deal. 5/16/2008 2:30:01 PM

American Strong Ale is not a style. It’s a catch all category for all the high ABV beers being brewed that are not some kind of Belgian beer, IIPA, barley/wheat/rye wine, old ale or an Imperial Stout.

Many people have called for either changing the baltic porter category’s name to strong porter and throwing the imperial porters there (many are touchy when it comes to the idea of eliminating or expanding the baltic porter category), throwing them in with regular porters (bad idea) or creating a new category designated Imperial Porter (there honestly isn’t enough of these nor is there any defining characteristics of what might constitute an Imperial Porter, IMO).
