In the last few months I collected some data when shopping for beer. I put it up in a spreadsheet, and did some comparison. The data Collection of data over a few months, so some price may have changed. I randomly chose some beers that are more likely to be available at multiple stores, local and imports, but I mostly avoided Vancouver beers. Prices include taxes (as prices should always do), and no deposit. Prices are listed as-is, no discounts taken into consideration, as they are not accessible to everybody (Camra requires membership; Friends&Family is 10%, Rep is 15%, Employee is 20%; Legacy has a membership system that gives effective 5% discount but you need to buy more; High Point has a membership system that gives progressive discount etc.) Some BCL/LDB prices have been added just for reference, they are not used int he calculation. The process I take into consideration only prices when I have at least N samples (currently 3; you can see that in cell Q4). Changing that parameter gives different numbers, but not different message. Data link

This is how it looks like, from the most expensive (Viti on Nanaimo) to the most reasonable (The Gull in North Van) (edit: I added some more data just now and Libation, as I suspected, climbed up to a worse position)

The number in the chart is only an indicator. In order to have a direct comparison, I calculate the "basket" for the items that two shops both sell, and then compare one shop directly to the other. In this way we can see, for example, that shopping at Brewery Creek is 11% more expensive than Legacy; at Denman is 4.8% more expensive than Legacy; and comparing worst to best, at Viti on Nanaimo beer is 20.1% more expensive than The Gull... How about running the numbers with the CAMRA discount? As some offer it and some don’t at different %. I’d be curious to see if it evens the playing field or further separates everyone. It is a cheap membership and most beer geeks in the city do have it or should.

A ’no’ would have sufficed.

I don’t usually buy my beer in Vancouver. Can you do one up for Victoria, Alex?
|
At the gas station, like normal people.

When I visited a couple of years ago I was impressed by how low prices are in Victoria compared to Vancouver... I hope that’s still the same
