Commercial Description:
Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser and more complex with age.

2008 batch. Pours black with a thick creamy head. Thick globs of lacing cling to the glass. Aromas of malt, alcohol and a bit of vanilla. Not as complex smelling as some imperials I’ve tried. The alcohol is not as dominant in the flavor as in the aroma, but it does leave a satisfying warmth. Sweet dominates, but is not overpowering. Hop flavors noted in some reviews has mostly faded at this point. There’s some licorice in there but not enough chocolate for my palate. The finish is just a little on the sour side. Mouthfeel is nice, but just a bit thin for an impy, at least to my preference. Pretty good overall, but not up to the level of others in this category.

2008 batch, poured oily black with little to no head with not much aroma, but the taste of sweet coffee and chocolate with some nice bittering hops and smoky ending makes this a delicious RIS!

On tap. Pour is dark dark brown with a medium tan head. Not as black as expected. Aroma is roasted malt, light coffee, light chocolate, and faint faint hop. Flavor is much more roasty than expected. Very little sweetness in this, much more coffee and faint bitterness. Finish is crisp and clean. I like this beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours black with a light tan head. Light aroma of plums and bready malt. Taste is sweet malt with very light bitterness. Full body with mild carbonation and a thick syrupy mouth feel. Overall, a bit too sweet and malty for me, I prefer some more roasty and hop qualities in my Imp Stouts.

Almost pitch black on the pour with little to no head. More like very very dark brown. I am getting vanilla upfront mixing in with chocolate and a nut smell. I am tasting chocolate very strong at first, also a wood flavor there as well, alcohol and a bit of caramel and toffee on the finish. Ages very well this one is over a year old and still somewhat hot.

Deep dark espresso color, thick tan head, laces well. Nose is a bit weak, but some roast and caramel notes come through. Taste is very warm and deep and smooth. Very drinkable, not overly heavily or sweet.
