Commercial Description:
Only available bottled (not bottle conditioned).
Available exclusively in Waitrose Stores over the Winter Months, this is a higher strength winter-time beer incorporating a range of organic cereals. The recipe includes the same organic Plumage Archer barley malt as Duchy Originals Ale, but with the Home Farm’s organic rye and oats added to give complexity and fullness of flavour.
The hop grist is a blend of the organic dwarf hop First Gold, sourced from the Hereford-Worcester border; and organic Target hops grown near Paddock Wood in Kent.
The combination of these organic ingredients has given Duchy Originals Winter Ale a dark ruby colour and warming toffee flavour, with hints of fruit and spice

Bottle (As ’Select Ale’). Clear amber pour with a beige head that doesn’t last long. Aroma is fruity but also quite malty, with notes of caramel, cherry, honey and berries. Flavour is similar but also has hints of spice, plum and other dark fruit. Surprisingly light in body and with a nicely balanced sweet and bitter finish. Overall quite rich but also a pretty nice winter ale.

Has a unique smell of something like wet grass and malts, a bit of cherry and caramel in there too. Looks very respectable, a small but solid head and decent dark amber colour. Taste is unique, with hops and cherries, not sure if I like the fruity bent of this ale. Palate is merely average. It’s a decent ale but not what I expected, can’t say I am entirely in favour of the unique taste but it’s all right.
