Commercial Description:
The Roman name for the Low Countries–is a marriage of the best in American and Belgian brewing traditions. Belgian pilsner malt, a generous amount of American and European hops and a unique Belgian yeast strain combine to give Belgica big notes of citrus and spice, creating a lively concoction perfect for spring in the Rockies–or the Ardennes. 7.2% ABV.

First released as Belgian IPA:
Just for fun, the brewers took our Titan, a hop forward American IPA and introduced a Belgian yeast strain to it. The result is unique Belgian-style ale with lots of fruity esters, a citrus hop flavor and nice hop bitterness that’s surprisingly smooth. 7.5% alcohol by volume.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a stemmed glass. The color is a clear golden with about two fingers of white foamy head and some nice lacing. The smell is fruity with some tangerine and peppery hop bitterness. The taste is pooped in my mouth and I was pushed back for a sec, the sugar flavor, like candy, bring about pictures of sweet tarts. Fruity flavors just pop on the tongue as it goes down and really feels like a treat to the taste buds. The feel is mid to medium bodied. It starts out like it will feel heavier that it ends up being on the way down. This is a strong beer but does not take you off your feet. It is warming and keeps you entertained to the last sip.

Belica has a bright yellow pour with some faint orange hues, gave a white two to three finger head with a decent amount of carbonation, and left nice lacing on the glass, aromas of lemon and orange citrus, lemon skin, pale malt, bread, light grass, floral and spices, and a faint fruit sweetness, flavors of light malt, bread, lemon, floral and citrus hops with little sweetness, has a citrus-pepper bitterness at the finish which trails a bit thereafter, has a dry finish, and medium mouth feel, a nice beer.

12 oz bottle. This is the first Belgian IPA I’ve ever experienced and it seems to mash the two styles together very well. It has the hoppiness and bitterness of a great IPA and that hallmark Belgian taste with definable banana esters. Smells and tastes exactly like what the label describes: a combination of IPA and Belgian-style ale. What a unique combo! I love it. I definitely taste a hint of wood here, too, like pencil shavings or something. Aromas of grapefruit, pine. A worthy experiment.

20091114 12oz bottle from State Line BBF 11 Apr 2010. Light golden color with small, lingering off-white head. Aroma is full of fruity candy, Juicy Fruit gum, and some floral perfumes. Medium bodied with medium eff. Some light malts up front giving way to a balance of fruit (mixed melon, orange), spice (coriander, clove, black pepper), and vegetal (green pepper, canned bamboo shoots). An okay take on this relatively unique style, but I’m glad to have bought just one bottle.
