Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Bottle. Poured a deep, dark brown with a thin beige head. Smells slightly acidic, nutty, and coffee like. Flavor is dessert like with a little bit of acidic roastiness, but mostly lots of dark, toasted coffee (a bit like Starbucks) and a bit of vanilla. Left a fair amount of lacing on my glass. Has a rich, creamy mouth feel. One of the better stouts I’ve had.

When I took my first slug of this dark brown hued beverage, my first thought was the coffee shop, my second thought was smooth, my final thought was thank god for winter stouts.

On tap at the Yard House, Phoenix location. Dark brown pour, thin brown cap. Rich sweet chocolate aroma. Again, chocolate on the palate, but there is a cola-like quality to the sweetness that I don’t care for. It seems to be missing the lactic acidity in the finish as well. Not bad, but not one I’d hurry back to.

Liked this milk stout had some roast to it will a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Finished sweet as it should, but the semi astringent flavor on the finish kept it from being above average.

12-oz bottle. Dark but not opaque. Thin brown head. Burnt coffee and toffee aroma - pleasant. Lightly sweet on the front with some sour notes. Medium bitterness like strong coffee. Medium body with lively carbonation. Clean finish. A very pleasant pleasant brew

Serving date: 2009-03-07. Served in snifter. Best before 15 May 2009. Almost black, but held by the light it reveals clear dark brown colors. The head is small, lightly cappuccino colored, settles fast and leaves minimal lacings. A soft but still rather powerful, very round smell. Lots of sweet chocolate. Some coffee, chocolate syrup, noticeable vanilla, Reminds me of chocolate milk. Strangely, the alcohol is also detectable. The taste duplicates the smell to a great extent. Some roasted malts, plenty of sweet chocolate, notes of coffee, milk, milk chocolate and quite a lot of vanilla. No fruit aromas to talk about. Sweet flavors definitely dominates. In the finish there is a very restrained bitterness, dark fudge, some soy sauce and notes of licorice. Very smooth, rather full-bodied, soft carbonation. Among the best milk stouts I’ve tried. Not your biggest stout, but very smooth and calm. Quite big flavors considering the low ABV. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

I had this beer a while ago so all I remember was, mmmmmm. It was dark and sweet, and I would love to pick up another bottle of this soon.

It may be unfair - I am not a fan of sweeter beers, and the sweetness that comes from the lacticid isn’t my cup of tea. Having said that, it has to be said that is a perfectly balanced brew and easy to see why it has won so many medals and accolades. The head is lovely and probably one of the nicest I have ever seen. The taste lingers on and sweetly drifts away after a fair while. A good beer, a great bee perhaps - but not my favorite,
