An above average stout from Scotland. Clearly Orkney’s flagship beer is skull splitter, but this deservers a little recognition as a nice stout as well. The body is jet black, huge fluffy light beige head. Aroma had a nice, although subdued roasted aroma and chocolate. Flavor is backed with roasted malt flavors. Seemed rather light for a stout with a puckering bitterness that I didn’t associate with hops, rather malt astringency. Easy to quaff a few.

Oily jet pour with a shrinking yellow-tan collar. Rich plummy and blackberry-like fruit on the nose: dusty roasted barley, burnt fruit loaf and musty hop as it warms. Ashy and slick; cocoa-dusted apple, some tobacco and peat in the aftertaste. Blackberry and apple to the fore, melding into a mellow cigar-like/cocoa linger as the roasted malts take over. Uncommonly good, distinctively fruity stout with some pungent aromas and flavours for a 4 percenter. Bit of a corker- loved every sip of this.

great texture and underlying aroma and flavor but scottish-ale-yeast-peat-smokiness dominates and buries it.

Pours black with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is roasty, slightly smoky malts, with hints of chocolate. Flavor is also roasty and smoky, but fairly light bodied for the style. Not bad.

pours black with a medium sized mocha colored head...decent retentioin and lacing. aroma has mild chocolate, dark fruit, roastiness, milkiness, and hints of vanilla and peat...very nice! flavor is roasty and peaty with a touch of dark fruit but other flavors suggested by the aroma are unfortunately lost. moutfeel is creamy and lively with a lingering roasty-burnt finish. all in all a pretty nice stout!

Bottle - 500 ml. Jet-black color with medium-sized, decent lacing, creamy brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, cocoa beans with notes of peat and slight smokey character. Nice peaty, smokey flavor profile with chocolate and mocha dryness. Some resinous hop leaves and some lactic acid feel sensible at the medium. Silky and creamy on the palate with soft carbonation level. Medium lasting rather dry finish. Easy drinking, tasty, coffeish stout.

Bottle at home. Appears as an opaque black beer with a large dense cafe latte coloured head that provides decent lacing. Strong roasted malt aromas of burnt coffee beans, bitter dark chocolate with hints of herbal hops and smokiness. Nice and smooth on the palate with a medium body and bittersweet dark malt flavours before a gentle spicy hop finish. At 4% ABV it is less rich and filling than other stouts I have tried but I am certainly not complaining.
