No sournes in the taste so I think there’s probably a better way of describing that smell I detect. It’s a little on the bitter side and not as well balanced as some of my favorite IPAs. Not bad but not worth the money. matthasson (66), Pennsylvania, USA

At first impression their is a lovely frothy white head that retains throughout. There is also a beautiful belgian lace. Its full of piney hop bitterness with citrus overtones. Its a straight up awesome ipa that really made my meal. hoppopotamus (187), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2009 A nice light brown to amber beer with a lot of hop haze and a small off white head. Aroma is quite hoppy, with fruity notes of strawberry, apple and citrus atop a caramel - toffee maltiness. The flavor has full-on hop bitterness, even overwhelmingly so, with not so much hop flavor. You can taste the booze in it too. You do get some notes of the aforementioned malt notes in the flavor as well. Finish quite bitter. bigrond (1055), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 16, 2009 very good IPA, it was a pleasant surprise. I’m not a huge fan of river horse, but this one is a winner. Aroma is strong and full of hops. Pours a deep copper and has a thick mouthfeel. Drinks smooth and finishes nice. 8.3% is also a plus. jcwattsrugger (5578), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

Aroma is pine/citrus-grapefruit hops, some medium malt. Taste is sweet light/medium malt, then herbal tea/medicinal hops, alcohol. Poured with a great head, the kind that looks like you could sculpt something. Lots of lacing
S - definite hop nose but not super strong
T - slightly sweet at first with a good firm, slightly bitter hop finish. dry on the end
m - just the right amount of carbonation
D - definitely a keeper with a nice hop balance. Can definitely drink more than one in a sitting

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 20, 2009 Snagged this at State Line. Probably the best beer I’ve had from River Horse, though admittedly that’s not a huge triumph. A deep golden pour, with sea foam head and some mild haze to it. I actually found the hop aroma somewhat modest, and the taste was moderately grassy, balanced by an indistinct fruitiness. Full bodied, and very drinkable - seems more like a regular IPA to me. Not bad at all. Heathen (810), Riverside, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 15, 2009 THOUGHTS: I was waiting to try this for a while back when I found this. Lots of hops, but not the kinds I really like. I don’t know from the other review if the early draft version was off or what, but the bottled version is full of hops. Not a lot of balance, but just enough to keep it from being unbearably bitter. At first I was a little put off by the aroma, but it grew on me. Orange rind is the star here.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark, brownish, orangey amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was light caramel malt; heavy piney, resinous, orangey, cat pee and earthy hops; some funk that I think was the hops and not the yeast. The initial flavor was sweet and bitter; while the finish was mostly very bitter and a little sweet with a very long duration. There was a little caramel malt, bitter orange peel, and piney, orangey and resinous hops. The medium body was sort of oily and then fairly dry with tingly carbonation and a light alcoholic finish.
