Commercial Description:
Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

Poured black with a thick 2 finger, lasting head that produced excellent lacing. Aroma was malty oatmeal with a few roasty notes. Taste was roughly matching. A nice medium bodied, creamy stout for a cold thanksgiving weekend.

Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma is very sweet. You can really smell the oatmeal. Goes down very smooth with tastes of oatmeal and coffee. Aftertaste is very sweet oatmeal. Excellent brew.

Bottle. Dark black body, with red hints. Small pale brown nice head. Dry aroma, hoppy with chocolate. Medium light flavour. Some chocolate. Not heavy, medium bodied. Light sweet and bitter finish. Easy drinking stout. (At home, 31.10.09)

Bottle at a tasting. Dark black with a big creamy and fluffy head. Nose is sweet and oatmeal. Some fruits. Taste is roasty and sweet. Very soft and mellow. Some fruits. Quite drinkable. Well balanced. Need to revisit.

0,5 l bottle, bought at Biererei, Vienna.
Deeeeep black body with a small but delicious, creamy tan head. Sourish oak/tannin in the nose with roasted malt, coffee, dried fruits like plum and raisins. Medium bodied with tastes of coffee and deep roasted malt, some wooden-vinous casks, some hidden spicy vanilla and bitterness. Roasted-coffee aftertaste.

Smells very heavily of deep dark malts and a bit of hops, but only the ’normal’ amount for this type of beer. Very, very dark, there was a very nice bit of fine head on the pour but it fades too quickly. The taste is a hazy layering of smokey malt, mid to end finishing hops and alcohal taste. Quite a nice blend, but each element is quite distinct in the flavour. Extreamely smooth, with an aftertaste of each of the flavours for just and instant. A great brew!

Pours black with medium-sized head. Faint aroma of nuts and raisins. Taste is sweet, almost no bitterness, you have your basic dark malts but no specific flavor stands out, drowned out by the sweetness I guess. At least the aftertaste is fairly dry. Very creamy mouthfeel. Didn’t really dig this one.

Pours very dark with a nice lingering tan head. There aroma is just nice, but the flavor is deep and complex. The palate is thick and creamy, and the flavor is bittersweet without being overly sweet. This beer would be better with a higher alcohol content and perhaps some more bitterness.
