Schlafly Oak Aged Oatmeal Stout

Asked about other brews not listed and this cask aged beer was there on 5/16/09 at the downtown Schlafly brewpub. Pulled a very dark black color with a dense thick off white head. Aroma is a light roasted malt, chocolate, light coffee and a light oak/woodiness. Flavor starts off very woody and gradually moves into a light whiskey background, roasted malt, light chocolate, some soft coffee and a bit of a less roasted malt, like Munich, and a nutty ending. Beer feels a bit thin for the flavors. Carbonation is low and served pretty warm. The lacing from the head is fantastic and there is a modest alcohol ending after the beer is gone from your mouth. Overall a good beer with all the flavors and aromas working well together but the beer feels just a bit thin for the flavors but definitely would have it again if it’s still on tap.

Tasted 9/13/08. Schlafly’s Hop in the City. Pitch brown hue with an eye ball of beige head. Vanilla cocoa malty aromas with notes of chocolate and woody. The Oak aging really adds a new dimension to the beer! Medium to full bodied with smooth malt character and a mildly creamy. Delicious! Low effervescence. Good woody vanilla character. Solid brew!

On cask at The Tap Room - pours very dark with a persistent tan head. The aroma has lots of vanilla, smooth roasted malt, some milk, a touch of sweetness and the faintest hint of oak that I only get if I’ve got it in my mind to find it. Medium / full rich body with very soft carbonation. The taste has a smooth oat stout, with gentle milk chocolate bordering on mocha, then it gets a bit bitter with a bit more of a coffee flavor and the tart bite of a green apple (not the flavor thankfully). The finish as a roasted malt bite, light oak and the crisp bite continues. A decent beer that would be interesting to try with a bit more time on the oak.
