malrubius (511), USA Nov 21, 2008 22 ounce bottle split in pint glass. Dark reddish brown with lasting flat head. Toasted caramel port earth with maybe a hint of peaty grassiness aroma. Toasted brown sugar ripe cherry port sweet fruitiness with mildly bitter grassy finish and slight lingering bitterness. Medium-full body and medium-low carbo. Pretty good example of the style, complex and tasty. JPDIPSO (4344), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Sep 17, 2008 Brown colored liquid with orange high-lights when held to the light. Thin beige, fizzy head that dissipates to a ring around the glass. Solid aroma with dark caramel, mild peat, and a bit of apricot. Sweet start with a bit of slightly burnt toffee. Quite light and almost airy in feel. Slight peat and alcohol add up to a mild bourbon flavors. Touch of tobacco and some medicinal flavors in the finish. Linger is faint with toasted malt and peat. Very nice, but the feel is thin, perhaps this one fermented a bit further than expected. EithCubes (1854), Indiana, USA Jul 30, 2008 Bomber. Richly malty nose, sweetish grape and brown sugar with a hint of smoky peat and a contribution from the yeast. Clear but dark ruby pour with medium-strong carbonation and a rich, creamy tanned head. Taste is lightly smoked with some campfire wood, dulled fruity malt with low residual sugariness, dark caramel, toffee, and peat toward the end and into the dry aftertaste. Syrupy lightish-medium body. Tasty; not exceptional for style but enjoyable overall. joekinty (227), rockledge, Florida, USA Jun 30, 2008 thick bodied pour with a small head that fades quickly nice soft fruit aromas sherry and chocolate very very slight pet flavor yet nice complexities great brew be careful very easy drinker at nearly 8% Heathen (525), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 20, 2008 THOUGHTS: Finally a Sly Fox I really liked. I know people who swear by them, but I just don’t usually get it. But I did with this one. I’t not great, but really nice. A very nice Scotch ale. Flavor is nice but drops off a lot in the finish. It’s sort of like Skullsplitter, but not quite as good. I like the smokiness because it isn’t overpowering, but I wish it wasn’t there to be truer to the original Scottish style.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, brownish red with a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate to heavy caramel malt, apple, cherry and slight smoke. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet, lightly acidic and moderately bitter with an average duration. There was lots of caramel malt with a little smoke to it and some apple and cherry with a little smokey bitterness at the end. The medium body was sort of syrupy then dry with fizzy carbonation and a light astringent, light alcoholic and metallic finish.
