Swalden28 (710), McKinney, Texas, USA Nov 2, 2008 Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours black with small copper head. Aroma of dark roast & alcohol. Flavor of strong dark roast and alcohol with a hoppy bitterness. Mouth feel is med.-full body with med. carbonation.....not too shabby... BMan1113VR (1149), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Nov 1, 2008 Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours thick black with a light brown head that disapears, but leaves some good lacing. Aroma has lots of vanilla, chocolate and coffee with a bit of caramel and a nice alcohol finish. Taste is roasty and full of vanilla with some alcohol. Lightly cream mouthfeel with some lively bubbles. SuzyGreenberg (1067), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 31, 2008 22 oz. bottle - thanks to biegaman for the trade; pours jet black with 1’ chocolate colored head; strength is obvious in the aromas; also rich and roasty; great balance of chocolate, vanilla; very much like bell’s expedition to me; just a little lighter in texture; smooth and rich; very tasty MrChopin (247), Pennsylvania, USA Oct 28, 2008 Thanks to jjpm79 for the bottle!
Black with a large tan head, lots of sea foam remaining. Nose is very hoppy, some fruit and roast coming along. Flavor mirrors this, more syrupy alcohol and chocolate than the nose, but the hops are still quite dominant. Heavy and thick, the hops offer some balance and keep it afloat, though perhaps my largest complaint is how short the flavor is. In the long run, too much hop for an IS (for me), but it definitely provides for a unique and overall very good beer.
