Commercial Description:
Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the "American Brown Ale" style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.

(10/17/08) Bottle at friends’ house in Philadelphia (thanks David T). Clear reddish brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, nuts, some caramel and toasty notes, some fruits and light hoppy hints. Sweet malty flavor with a nutty character, some toasted bread notes, faint coffee hints , some light fruitiness and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. An OK Brown Ale. Quite boring.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a tan head. Sweet and malty aroma. Well-balanced flavor that has a decent hop character that I wasn’t used to seeing in brown ales. I liked it.

strong hops make for a full body, i don’t know why they call it a ’brown’ ale though

Poured a dark copper reddish brown with a one finger frothy yellowish tan head. The nose was sweet and malty, caramel, earthy malt, not much hop character. The flavor was malty, sweet, definitely residual sugars, still not picking up much hop character. Caramel malt flavor for sure, pretty sweet, definitely in need of that balance it says it has.

Poors a deep amber red, with a hint of brown. could nearly pass for a red wine in color. Smooth feel with a sweetness that is well balanced with a hoppy bitterness. Roasted malt, caramel, and a hint of chocolate maybe. Nice mixture of flavors leads to an enjoyable brew.
