glennmastrange (459), hobe sound, Florida, USA Nov 29, 2008 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of dark bread and nutty, light perfume for the hops, light to moderate dough and earth for the yeast, with toffee, brown sugar, dried cherry, spice and bourbon in the background. Head is large, creamy, off-white with excellent lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is murky brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy and chewy almost syrupy and has a lively carbonation. It finishes dry and a little astringent. A great balance in flavors and a rich texture makes this an exceptional Doppelbock. tgncc (340), Bellmore, New York, USA Nov 27, 2008 The aroma is a pleasing mix of malts, toasted grains, and dark fruits, maybe some molasses. The appearance is true to the style, an attractive dark red/purple/brown, with a steady tan head. The flavor is, like many dopplebocks, a nice sweet, fruity flavor, malts, bready. The mouthfeel is appropriately thick for the style, and the finish has a mild bittering from hops. Well crafted beer overall. Nice representation of the style. noncaloric (194), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Nov 20, 2008 Aroma is caramelized malts, vanilla, a little alcohol bitterness. Pours dark brown, thin beige head, significant lacing. Flavor has rich malt complexity: malt syrup, caramel, vanilla, nuts, but it’s cut by a significant medicinal bitterness that takes the pleasure out of it. Smooth, but syrupy cloying on the palate. theisti (1166), Leawood, Kansas, USA Nov 19, 2008 22 oz bottle courtesy of mcox99. Pour is very unfiltered cloudy brown with visible chunks. Aroma of earthy slight ash, some fruit sweetness taste is the nose, with a very unfiltered body. Palate is full. I loved the depth and complexity of this beer. Nice one. dogfish120love (110), west hartford, Connecticut, USA Nov 18, 2008 Pours a dark brown almost black with a very thin head. Smells heavily of Malt and some coffee, chocolate, raisin and alcohol. Tastes of sweet malt, plum, raisin, prune and coffee. Palate: : sticky syrupy sweet. Makes lips stick together. Nice warming alcohol finish. Very drinkable, but more of a one beer sit and sip for a long duration
