The aroma carries a nice wedge of oak followed by apples, pears and apricots. Additional pulls bring up brighter fresher oak notes and a background of booze heat and whiskey. The taste begins with pears and apricot followed closely by sweet ripe Granny Smith apples. As midway approaches I pick up the Belgian yeasty spice building to a level to be heard over the fruitiness and then modest oak. Toward the finish it dries out only a tad as the whiskey makes a meek appearance to help round out the fruitiness, spices and touch of oak. Very nice and full of yum! | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 21, 2009 On tap at 3floyds, served in a tulip. Amber pour with huge head. Woody aroma of strong bourbon barrels. Flavor is nice but dominated by smokey, bourbony, woody tones from the barrel. I almost thing the barrel put too much in this beer. Pretty impressive beer though. sebletitje (1925), Tampa, Florida, USA

Flavor, whiskey is very forward, with some wood/peat notes. Light spices and plenty of booze on this one. Malty with some yeast elements on the palate, dark fruits;raisins and possibly dark sugar. corby112 (745), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a dark copper color with dark ruby and chestnut brown hues when held to a light source with a huge frothy beige head that has excellent retention, lasting the whole way through and leaving nice chunks of lacing along it’s way.
Peppery spice aroma with a nice citrus fruit presence along with an earthy oak, vanilla and whiskey notes.
Spicy flavor with a nice peppery presence and hints of citrus and dark fruit. Orange peel, lemon zest, orange peel, dark cherry, plum, raisin, fig are balanced out by a peasant earthy oak/vanilla flavor from the aging with a nice bit of whiskey and a slightly sour, dry finish. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 2, 2009 Medium copper, a bit of a gusher, although no apparent infection, fairly typical with this brewer, Aroma is fruity, mostly light cherry and apricot. Flavor matches, with a bit of a woody yeast finish, and some alcohol heat as well. Not bad, but actually preferred the original kerst. Spicing incidentally not evident. MrGGen (231), Italy
