And I mean my nose is burning spice. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and seems to get more hot spicy as I drink it. Did they brew this with hot peppers or what? Just spicy. That seems to stick out more to me more than anything. thornecb (1804), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 23, 2009 Tap at Mug Ale House: Deep murky brown/maroon pour with a tan ring of head. Spicy/chewy aroma- lots of rye giving off a chocolaty like note and thick dark bread. There’s also a mild fruity note from the yeast. A bit slick in texture. The flavor has a chewy rye presence and a date paste-like sweetness. There’s also some chalky phenolcis. A bit chalky overall but not bad. EithCubes (2167), Indiana, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 22, 2009 Birthday bottle. Room-filling dark and earthy rye aroma with muddy malts. Roast smoke and crust, some nice Maillard reactions. Chestnut pour with a huge, rocky and lacing tan head. Sweet sugary taste, caramel and extremely spicy rye, some alcohol wollop despite the modest percentage. Black and green licorice (don’t ask) in the finish. Shot of not-quite-clove phenols. Flimsy thin body and feel. Not much to rave about here, sort of a liquid-yeast smell and aftertaste, a minor disappointment from a brewery I’ve come to respect. bu11zeye (5621), Frisco, Texas, USA
