austrian marzen

In Austria, the term Märzen is used for a Helles/Export-like pale lager, mostly in the 4.9%-5.2% range. The difference is caused by post-WW2 legal price regulations for the style, which, as effect, resulted in lower °P and even the addition of adjuncts (rice in particular), which gave it recognizable nutty notes. Over time, the legal regulations were lifted, but the style continued on, largely replacing adjuncts with winter barley malt.
