Much to the chagrin of my colleagues, ubiquitous cheap pale yellow lager is beer, not swill, and I like it! DISCLAIMER:
I am by no means a beer expert, nor am I qualified to rate by style. My rating of 0-5 is based only on how much I enjoyed it, not the quality of the beer, cider, sake, lambic or what ever.
In my humble opinion, purposefully bitter hops are adjuncts which were originally used as a preservative. They add an unnatural bitter flavor and hide the real complexities of beer. Nevertheless, I have tremendous respect for those beer experts who love it.
