“Big and spacious. Good view. Close to the brewery in Buttenheim. The kellerbier served here is the bottled edition. Nice spot.“

“Visited with SinH4 and CS. Our third choice for lunch after the first two were closed for urlaub. Plenty f parking. Very nice biergarten out back. Inside has two cozy rooms and a bar with barstools at which you can sit, eat and drink. Food was tasty and of course portions are large. Just one tap, tasty enough, and some bottles. Locals ignored us, which is fine.“

“The popular Löwenbräu Keller located a short walk away from the brewery. Large place with a couple of beers in fine condition. Franconian quality offered throughout. If you have to choose, though, go for the Haustrunk at the brewery itself.“

“Spent a night here in late autumn of 2017 with MoritzF and jonas. The owner is a fun guy, and they serve a special beer here (the Haustrunk, don't mix it up with the usual Ungespundetes!) which is one of the great examples of Franconian Landbier. The food is tasty, and they sometimes have rather unusual stuff on the menu (like pigeon or carp innards). Definitely worth coming here for a night, despite being a bit away from public transport (a half hour walk).“

“Visited 6.10.17. We were in Buttenheim for Lowenbrau but this place, right next door, is bigger and seems more established. We had a beer by them a few years ago in Romania that the non-rater of us actually remembered and some free time so we sat there for a round and a bottle of non-alcoholic. Nice and cosy with wooden panels on the walls. Also, by the time we got there, the Levi Strauss Birthplace (which we learned about upon entering Buttenheim) was already closed for the day, so no tourists - that's always a plus.“

“Visited 6.10.17. Originally the reason we made it to town, because of the beer from the 1001 beers book. We arrived early afternoon and there were only a few people in the place - post-lunch slowtime, I guess. Small, local, even a little hostile (nothing wrong with that IMHO) atmosphere. We only drank a bottle of the beer from the book and lager on tap that was fresher than when we sampled it from the bottle a year ago, nice but nothing exceptional. Has Wi-Fi.“

“Visited Oct 2016. Super cosy bar / brewery / restaurant in the centre of this small town, with traditional decor. Really friendly service from the waitress, made us feel very welcome. Selection not huge but the bockbier that we had here was the best that we had in the region. Food was excellent, I had the goose, my wife had the ’sauerbraten’. Prices super cheap for both food and beer. A must visit in my opinion.“

“Brewery that only sells beer via. local home delivery or bottle sales on site. Very friendly service, the guy that got our beers for us even carried them out to our car. When he discovered that we had driven down from Berlin, he gave us a bottle of their newest creation, Sommer Bier, for free. Seem to have 10+ different beers on at any time. Can buy beers in fives (quarter crates basically); we bought 2 x 5 beers and the price was 8 euros. Definitely worth calling in to pick up a few! The Sommer Bier was, by the way, rather good; an easy-drinking dark lager, reminded me a bit of a British Mild.“

“One of the most unique old-school beer drinking experiences of my life. Tiny, cosy Bierstube, locals only playing cards, ceramic mugs with awesome metal lids with a hop cone decoration. Totally bizarre that this brewery is LITERALLY right next door to another decently sized brewery (St. Georgen). Beer was cold and cheap and delicious Franconian lager!“

“Kind of visited this place in January 2014. The brewery was apparently ’closed for renovation’ or some such. After wandering about, we found an employee of the brewery. Thankfully, one of our party spoke (speaks) German and was able to negotiate a sale; so, we ended up with around 14 bottles for something like EUR 8, which we drank outside the brewery. The beers were pretty good, and definitely good value. And the guy working at the brewery offered a pretty nice service to us. So, in my limited experience at this place, I can say that they have good beers and employ at least one decent fellow.“

“Great little place. Humble and kitchen-like. Cozy and amenable. Nice beer range, excellent value, good service. The place is about a 20-minute walk from the nearest train station, FYI. A really good place to visit.“

“Mooie kelder midden in het bos op een heuvel bij een kapel. Eten is typisch voor de streek en uiterst betaalbaar. Bier van het vat (gravity) in standaard pullen. Gewoon een erg leuke lokatie met mooi uitzicht om wat te drInken of te eten.“

“As others have said, it’s a large brewery selling their beer only on premises, not available in any Getraenkemarkt. To buy bottles just step into the office, look over the bottle sheet and pay, you’ll be given a hand-written receipt to take to the back garage where an employee will grab your order. It’s kind of shocking how large these guys are for not selling their beer anywhere but at the brewery, but this is Upper Franconia so I guess business from the regulars is good. Polite folks running the place, and lots of stuff to see if you like geeking out on brewing equipment.“

“Visited in November 2012 just before lunchtime .. We thought to have our food in here because the best reference about this place than the lowenbrau .. After a pils and a kelkerbier we changed our mind and we said " let’s try the other place just next door" .. We did we never came back in here ... I mean the place is very nice and the beers too but after you taste the kelkerbier in the lowenbrau you can’t get nothing better in town .. I would visit again the place anyway .. Revisited several time from the first visit .. We came here at the beginning of October 2014 and I must say that the Keller was in a very good shape !! I tend to like more micros and I don’t know if we can stil consider here as micros but the result is very good ..“

“Went there at a Saturday afternoon at around 5 pm and found the place crowded like a swimming pool in the Sahara. Unbelievable. Had to share the table with another couple, strange feeling. Very noisy, very crowded, very closely, no atmosphere. Mostly locals there - I guess, they enjoyed themselves a lot there since it is more or less a simply villagers pub. Service was ok, not the best to expect, but hey, they were stressed. Beers were nice. Orderd their deer ragout for dinner, but couldn’t finish it. First, the portion was more than big, but it was also not that tasty like I know deer meals. The meat was not good, light skunky. Prices were very fair, very low, but I just couldn’t enjoy the visit. Will not come back.“

“Lovely old school vibe where locals sit around chatting and drinking from their own mugs. The Lagerbier was tasty but on the day the neighbouring St Georgen Brau Keller bier trumped it. I didn’t eat but a full menu available. Nice experience.“

“Cosy and popular brewpub with a distinctly kitchen feel! Good selection of beers served with German efficiency and a little grumpiness. The barmaid never let the fact I was sitting at the table drinking my beer stop her from assaulting me with her breasts as she barged me out the way to get to the table. It was taken in good humour! Overall well worth the trip out from Bamberg.“

“Visited during Jolly to Bamberg 2014. Or actually did not really visit. We came there only to find it was closed for refurbishment. Before giving up we walked into the brewery, found a guy and was allowed to but all the different beers that were stored in there. We tried the beers outside the brewery and then Went for the station.“

“A bit of a walk from the train station. Traditional pub, with a large TV showing sports. Good selection of their own beer. It is a bit out of the way, but if you happen to be close by sure head in for some beer, but it’s not worth going out of the way for.“

“A review / non review but useful info non the same ... Visited around 12.30 lunchtime on Saturday 25th January 2014 to be greeted by a ’closed for refurbishment until 31 Jan’ sign ! Right next to Lowenbrau as others have touched on so no great loss as we’d already visited the former. Both these venues are a good 15+ minute walk from the HBF and there were no sign of any taxis. What to do ? There was a hotel opposite with a St Georgen Brau sign on it so we thought we’d pop in there to get some ticks (there is of course the keller but we didn’t have time for this). So we wander around this dimly lit hotel and stumble into someones bedroom and a guy with a hoover appears who speaks neither English or German !!! He was wearing fluffy grey socks along with sandals - this was not a good look but I was unable to tell him this ! We couldn’t find the bar so stumbled out the other side via another darkened corridor - I shit you not 9 of us tickers trooping through this hotel with the only person on hand armed with a hoover and unable to communicate with us ! Back to the brewery where Jan negotiated a crate of beer. 14 bottles for 8 Euros, 11 different beers all told - BARGAIN !!! We stood outside for 20 minutes drinking our plunder around an ornate stone table with tap handles on it. Never give up on a closed venue - there are always ticks at the end of the tunnel :P“

The upper of the two Buttenheim Kellers; in a simple Kellerhaus You’ll get Your gorgeous St. Georgen Kellerbier, then You’ll take a seat one one of the terraces and - if You are lucky - You’ll enjoy Your mug with a beautiful view right to the Bamberg Michaelsberg. Recommended!“

“Ambivalent Keller: Large Kellerhaus, domiated by concrete and brown tiles, nearly as attractive as a waiting room with an ugly - concrete dominated as well - patio facing the heavily frequented main road. Nice, authentic franconian shady Keller (beergarden) behind the Kellerhaus, located in a little wood on a slope; very simple meals are offered, but the main attraction is the superb Löwenbräu Lager (Kellerbier). Worth a detour, but only in fine westher!“

“Visited July 2013. This keller has a much better location than Lowenbrau just down the hill. You sit amongst the trees and look out on Buttenheim and beyond. Very nice. I only tried the Kellerbier and it was one of the best beers of my four weeks in Germany. I was surprised at how good it was after some reports of declining quality at the brewery. Quite complex with chocolate, orange and roastiness all figuring. Be aware when visiting Buttenheim that Buttenheim railway station is a LONG walk from the town (it’s not really in in Buttemheim).“

“Visited July 2013. Went here right after the Lowenbrau tap. It is located not far from the village center and near a busy road. You sit amongst the trees. Self serve window. I had the Kellerbier which was bitter and good, and the Barholomaus Fest Marzen from a bottle which was tasted and smelled of rancid buttered popcorn and was a drain pour. There are much better kellers than this, including St Georgen just a five minute walk away. Be aware when visiting Buttenheim that Buttenheim railway station is a LONG walk from the town (it’s not really in in Buttemheim).“

“Visited July 2013. Sat in the tap room which has nice decor. There is a ’stammstich’ table. Ate the wild hog (wildschwein) which was okay. The Lagerbier was quite bitter and good. The krugs come with metal lids, and leaving your lid up indicates you want another beer. There was a nice younger German fellow there that offered to drive me to the St Georgen keller, and then to the Lowenbrau keller when that turned out not to be open yet. Be aware when visiting Buttenheim that Buttenheim railway station is a LONG walk from the town (it’s not really in in Buttemheim).“

“No brewery-tap, just a small franconian brewery a few kilometers east of Buttenheim with a rather wide range of beers... Since the Meusel brews are not sold in any drinks-market or bottle-shop ( the beers are directly delivered to the customers, a system called "Heimdienst"), You have to come here and ask the very friendly brewer for some samples.
