30 /100 Smoker Friendly (Beer Store) 100 S HURON ST Small liquor store with a small sampling of craft beers. Not the 100s as the website said. Only a few WV beers which is why I stopped in the first place. Dissipointing. |
74 /100 2200 MAIN STREET Tiny place located off an alley a block off the main drag. They just have a tiny tasting room in the front of the brewery, Beers were all pretty good and the gut serving was very friendly and knowledgable. They have some of their beers on tap at several places around Wheeling. Worth a stop. |
48 /100 Kroger - Wheeling (Grocery Store) 200 MT. DECHANTAL ROAD Typical Kroger. I came here hoping to find WV ticks, but found zero. I guess this particular panhandle identifies more with PA/OH. The mix your own section was ample, and I could have found six new ticks to fill the $9.99 six pack. Decent selection for the area but definitely not worth going out of your way. |
88 /100 2200 MAIN STREET Stopped here on the spring 2017 tour of WVA. Warehouse in downtown Wheeling. Lots of parking on road and in parking lot. Both brewmasters were there today. Taste as many as you want but they only sell and fill crowlers and growlers.Bought a crowler after tasting a bunch for $10. Decent selection of mild beers but they do have a few bigger beers there as well. All the beers were well done, nothing really off style. So friendly are the guys and they really know their beer stuff. They go out of their way to please. I’ll be back. |
26 /100 Later Alligator (Restaurant) 2145 MARKET ST Not sure why this place is on the list of beer places. Stopped in during my wheeling beer run. They don’t even have taps and the bar, if you call it that is 2 feet wide. Yes they have a few craft beers in bottles, but what place don’t these days? Very disappointing. When I asked what was on tap, the guy looked at me like I was an alien from mars. Much better beer places within walking distance so if you are looking to try beers, don’t waste your time here, go to wheeling brewing, brew keeper or even river city which are all just down the block. I didn’t stop in for the food so if you are hungry, read brick’s review below, he says its a good food place. However, one block down is the famous fish market and I know that place has good food, fairly cheap too! |
80 /100 River City Restaurant & Bar (Restaurant) 1400 MAIN STREET No longer called River City Ale Works, just River City, they dropped the Ale Works thing years ago. So, they don’t brew beer here anymore and haven’t for years, but they have a very good tap list of locals as well as a variety of decent crafts & Belgian. First thing you’ll think when you see this place is its a well done classy place. A restored 4 story building in downtown wheeling. I was nervous at first because all I saw were guys walking around in ties and jackets, with pretty girls in dresses and business casual, and I only had my t-shirt on. Yes, so dog-gone classy, one of the classiest beer places I’ve ever been to. A fun & cool place to hang out fer sher. Dining area is separate from the bar so that was OK with me. Bar tender was attractive and helpful. Parking on street with coin meter, 25 cents per hour. Was a little disappointed that the beer I wanted didn’t have the co2 working, so I tried yet another and same. I waited for a while while they tried to fix it but I must have been down on the priority list because even after about 20 mins, it still didn’t work. However, the bar girl gave me a free glass of beer and I also finally did find a brew on a tap that worked. So any way, it must have been a fluke so I won’t penalize them for it. For service I gave an 8 but my bar tender actually deserved a 10 because she did all she could to get those managers to fix it. Second and third floor has a trinket shop in it. Nice wood and granite all over this place, if for nothing else, you got to stop by and check out the interior, open foyer up to the third floor! Nice classy overall beer tasting experience except for the beers I couldn’t try. I really did want to try the Wild Wolf 151 but no luck on that rarity. Too bad. |
78 /100 2200 MAIN STREET Visited on a Saturday in the early afternoon. It’s sort of difficult to find, but the address is correct. It’s on the side of a building toward the back of it. Look for a big black flag with the word "OPEN" on it. They do have a parking lot with maybe 20 spots. More than enough it would seem. This place is set up only for offsite sales. Growlers and Crowlers only. You can sample up to 12 2 ounce pours at no cost. They had 8 available on my visit of various styles. They did each style well to very good. A plus for visiting this place is that you are a 2 minute walk from Wheeling’s other brewery, Wheeling Brewing Company. I think this place is making better beer, though. Definitely stop if you are in Wheeling, or just passing through. It’s less than 5 minutes from Interstate Exit 1A. |
78 /100 Kroger - Wheeling (Grocery Store) 200 MT. DECHANTAL ROAD new rating 12/2016: This place is much improved, they now have a great mixer sixer for $9.99 and I was easily able to find a quick 6 of beers I never had. Nice improvement oblebay. We stopped there recently to see the oglebee lights at holidays but was disappointment in the light show. However, I was glad we went because we got to into this much improved friendly down home grocery store on the way out. They also had lots of down home style food there as well. Very happy we stopped, we got some really good homemade hard crusted multigrain bread that was simply dee-lish! Good improvement on service as well. .....old rating. 7/2010: This place was a very disappointing experience. I went out of my way to go to this place because the previous rater said they had mountaineer beers here. Well, not any more. i couldn’t even find anybody there to ask a question about if they had some. None in the typical sixpack display. On top of this, they had the interstate route 70 closed for construction. What a big cluster. Yea they do have many sixpacks of common micros and afew exports but over all Ithink this place should be removed from the places listing of ratebeer. Piss me off, wasted trip. |
56 /100 The Alpha Tavern (Restaurant) 50 CARMEL ROAD Stopped by here because the proprietress of Brew Keepers, the newest brewery in Wheeling, told me that their first beer is on tap here. Sure enough, it was. Drinking here is like drinking in a moose lodge, or maybe a taxidermists. Long bar on the left, bar tables in two rooms. Friendly young servers, attentive and knowledgeable. Very tasty food, one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while, and the Philly cheese steak the guy next to me ordered looked pretty good too. Small tap list, nothing exciting. Bigger bottle list, also not exciting - nothing local except the one Brew Keepers beer. Good enough for West Virginia, but hopefully they’ll step up their game. |
64 /100 Smoker Friendly (Beer Store) 100 S HURON ST First off, it is a convenience store. But so what? It has six packs of many craft and import brews, many more than expected. Yes, good prices too. Liking this place. Although they don’t have a decent mix your own six pack thing, you can mix a sixer of quart or macros for about 7$, good overall beer experience. Found a brew I never tasted before, Stack from melanie, heheh. |
60 /100 Smoker Friendly (Beer Store) 100 S HURON ST (Visited 10/2011): Smoker Friendly is located right off I-70 north of Wheeling on S. Huron. There is a small private lot to the side of the building, plus some nearby street parking.
The interior is spacious and well-lit with the beer being located in the rear of the store.
Smoker Friendly’s beer selection is decent for West Virginia. It includes domestic craft brewers such as Great Lakes, Sierra Nevada, Yuengling, Rogue and Duquesne. There are some imports from Germany, the UK and Belgium too.
Staff is friendly for the most part but given the area and convenience store nature of the place I did not have high expectations.
Overall this is an okay spot to stop, although they really do not have anything that most better grocery stores carry these days. |
68 /100 Later Alligator (Restaurant) 2145 MARKET ST (Visited 03/2011): Later Alligator is located in downtown Wheeling on Market Street. Metered street parking is fairly abundant in the surrounding area.
The cafe has brick walls, a fireplace and interesting knickknacks. Booths and tables throughout the interior and windows let in natural light. There is a tiny bar in the middle.
Definitely more a cafe than bar, Later Gator stocks around 25 beers with several options that set it apart from most spots in WV. They carry a few different Yuengling labels, Augustiner, SIerra Nevada and Great Lakes. They also stock a few imports like Stella, Bass and Smithwick’s.
Service is friendly and attentive.
Later Gator has an eclectic menu of soups, salads and most importantly crêpes (both of the breakfast and savory lunch variety). All of the different types my colleagues and I tried on multiple visits were great.
Overall this is a fun little spot that isn’t a beer mecca by any stretch, but they carry enough quality options to satisfy any craft beer fan. |
24 /100 Kroger - Wheeling (Grocery Store) 200 MT. DECHANTAL ROAD I was told that I must go to Kroger in Wheeling to find good beers at a great price because I live in PA. Well, I found neither a good selection of beers or good prices. I won’t return here for micros or imports. |
22 /100 Kroger - Wheeling (Grocery Store) 200 MT. DECHANTAL ROAD Revised Dec 2011 - Just the typical beer selection for a Kroger store. No longer worth a stop. Revised rating to reflect the lack of an easily accessible WV beer. A typical Kroger store. I only rated this due to the fact that it is easily accessible from I-70 on trips through WV and they stock a couple Mountaineer Brewing Company beers. Thus making it easier to get that first West Virginia beer without too much trouble. |
64 /100 River City Restaurant & Bar (Restaurant) 1400 MAIN STREET This place has a great vibe to it, if nothing else. Nice restaurant, very clean and nicely decorated. I was disappointed to learn that the Ale Works no longer sells Mountaineer, as I had dropped in looking to try it. Selection is not that great - mostly macro with the exception of a few Great Lakes brews. The bartenders and other staff members were friendly and helpful, and the prices are great compared to what I’m used to. |
60 /100 River City Restaurant & Bar (Restaurant) 1400 MAIN STREET (Visited 08/2007): Although this place’s sign reads River City Ale Works, I learned pretty quickly that they no longer brew their own beer. A shame, really. The bar/restaurant/banquet facility is located in downtown Wheeling on Main Street. There is nearby metered street parking and garages here and there.
The building is 3 stories with lots of windows on the outside and sits on a corner. Inside it is very spacious and has a yellow brick and greenish metal motif. The bottom floor has a bar on the left side, including what looks like a small room that used to house the brewing equipment, which still displays a nice collection of old beer bottles and cans. The bar is opposite a group of pool tables and big screen TVs.
Again, the beer selection here is pretty weak. As River City no longer brews their own beers, they have settled on 6 macros and 2 Mountaineer brews.
Service here was fine on a weekday afternoon. The server knew enough about the 2 regional beers to be able to describe them. The food also came out quickly.
Speaking of food, my beer battered fish sandwich and fries were above average.
Overall it seems this place would have been a better visit a couple years ago (even if the beers they made weren’t great), but as far as non-chain restaurants in Wheeling that serve regional beers on draught it will do. |
