72 /100 Crafty Merlin's (Bar) 6 BUCKTON’S YARD Lovely little place on Buckton's Yard. Not in the spot on the rate beer map. Very friendly server and clientelle. Good selection of beer too on draft and on the fridge. |
78 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD Cracking micro in Darlo, visited when attending footy match, sat outside, table service, drank a couple of pints of a Two by Two IPA which was immaculate, served by a friendly and helpful waitress. recommended. |
70 /100 130 NORTHGATE Visited July 2018. |
54 /100 Pennyweight (Bar) 8 BAKEHOUSE HILL Visited July 2018. |
60 /100 Tanners Hall (JDW) (Bar) 63-64 SKINNERGATE Visited July 2018. |
72 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD Visited July 2018. |
72 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Visited July 2018. |
62 /100 Hash Bar and Kitchen (Bar) 14 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Visited July 2018. |
68 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD A micropub further up the street from Number Twenty2. A little bar room at the entrance and a small corridor leading up to a few more seating. One of their own beers available among six cask ales. A few beers on kegs, and bottles/cans in a fridge. No thirds. Friendly and relaxing place. (Visited with Finn 29.01.2020). |
66 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Long and rather narrow room, with a ditto long L-shape bar. On our stay there were four Village ales available. All their draught beers, including ten cask ales, were available in thirds. Decorated with lots of mirrors. Quite busy late on a Wednesday afternoon, visited by a variety of clients. Polite service. (Visited with Finn, 29.01.2020). |
80 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD Truly a proper real ale destination. Nine hand-pumps with emphasis on beers from local and regional breweries, many of them new to us. They do thirds of their draught beers. A well kept old school pub in wood and old bricks, full of charm. Welcome and attentive service. Music by the Clash in the background. Located in a yard just off the main street, the Machanics Yard sign should be easy to spot. One of the highlight on our trip to England this winter. (Visited with Finn 29.01.2020). |
72 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD Nice little pub with hard to find entrance in a very tiny alley. Good selection of local casks and their own brews. They had a small scene for music gigs. Could be cramped here. |
68 /100 Hole in the Wall (Bar) 14 HORSEMARKET Fairly big pub with lots of seating. We went here for a burger, which was pretty good and a few local cask beers, that could have been better. |
64 /100 Darlington Snooker Club (Bar) 1 CORPORATION ROAD Odd place with a well hidden entrance door. Looked like about ten snooker tables were available if you wanted to play that. They had some good local casks available too. |
76 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD Great little pub with a good cask selection including two of their own beers. Friendly atmosphere. |
58 /100 130 NORTHGATE Nice little pub with good selection of locsl casks. Unfortunately there was no option for washing hands at the mens room ... |
64 /100 Darlington Snooker Club (Bar) 1 CORPORATION ROAD This place is pretty unique in terms of location. As the suggests it a located in a snooker club. The room with the seats could do with a tidying up. We had two cask ales and a local kegged beer as well. Nothing too exciting, but one of them was from Half Moon Brewery. |
68 /100 130 NORTHGATE Cozy little pub. Unfortunately they had none of their own beers on at our visit, which was a letdown. They did have a couple of other local beers on cask, so we had them instead. |
64 /100 Old Yard Tapas Bar (Restaurant) 98 BONDGATE Nice place to go, if you eant both food and drinks. I was just here for the beers, so I didn’t try the food. Found three new beers here which was great. |
72 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Nice pub that brews their own beers. 10 casks and 4 of their own were available. Must visit, if in Durham. |
62 /100 Old Yard Tapas Bar (Restaurant) 98 BONDGATE This place is a mix between a pub and as the name suggests a tapas restaurant. We went here early, so we didn’t eat, but we did have af couple of cask beers including a local one. There are better options for beer in Darlington, but if you’re looking for a food and beer combination, this looks like a good place. |
72 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Cosy brewpub with four of their own beers on at our visit. Friendly service and chatty locals. Nice, dark brown interior. |
66 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD Small pub with a few beers from their own brewery - and some guests. |
68 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Cozy place with a ok selection. |
74 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD Nice pub with a small brewery. Good service. Unusual beers. |
54 /100 Hash Bar and Kitchen (Bar) 14 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Decent nice café/bar with some interesting beers in the fridge
Maybe ok if you want to eat
Located close to Number Twenty-2 and ORB
Choose ORB insted if you want some good beers
About 15 min walk from the Train station
|
58 /100 Pennyweight (Bar) 8 BAKEHOUSE HILL Cousy pub at the Market Square in Darlington
Easy to find. About 10 min walk from the train station
Decent beer selection. But there are far better places in this town
Look in the fridge, and you might find something interesting
|
60 /100 Hole in the Wall (Bar) 14 HORSEMARKET Cousy traditional English pub at the Market Square in Darlington
Easy to find. About 10 min walk from the train station
Decent beer selection. But there are far better places in this town
|
78 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD WoW. Probably the best beer place in Darlington
Lovely small place with a solid cask/tap – bottle/can selection
Both real ale and more modern craft beer
Cooler with a fine selection of international beers
About 15 min walk from the train station
Highly recommendable pit stop in Darlington
#1 on my list in this town
Should maby be listed as a Brewpub now. They do have their own beer |
76 /100 2 MECHANICS YARD WoW. A little well hidden gem in Darlington
It was not easy to find. Even when we used google
Would never have found this if it I had not used Ratebeer
Lovely small place with a fine cask/tap – bottle/can selection
About 15 min walk from the train station
Highly recommendable pit stop in Darlington
#2 on my list in this town
|
66 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Nice cousy well kept traditional English pub
Ok rang of cask ales. Also some of their own on my visit
About 15 min walk from the train station
But I would recommend ORB 5m up the road for a larger beer selection
|
66 /100 House of Hop (Bar) 4B HOUNDGATE Called in last month and tried Midnight Slug from Roundhill brewery. Cask and keg beers on offer, but only open Thursday to Sunday. |
74 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD Visited this microbar on 20 July and enjoyed Saints Row Window Shopper and First Brew Thirst porn from this busy friendly pub. |
60 /100 William Stead (JDW) (Bar) 8 CROWN STREET Visited July 19 and had 2 Daleside beers, Monkey Wrench and Old Legover. |
84 /100 22 CONISCLIFFE ROAD For me this pub serves the best beer in the town temperature and condition wise for sure never had a bad ale or service in here. |
60 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD Good pub serving real ale and craft beer no time for craft beer but beer fests are awsum here as well as the ALES on bar worth a look support your little pubs not the big chains. |
80 /100 130 NORTHGATE Great little pub probably smallest pub in town, ever changing ALES up to 7 ALES, own brewery to crafty pint bottle shop now gone awsum old pub not far from town clock. |
60 /100 Vesuvio (Bar) 3A HOUNDGATE Lounge styled bar, relaxed and friendly, there's a couple of cask ales available at the small bar at the back, both were local brews. Bottles are available and on display on shelves on the walls. |
52 /100 Hash Bar and Kitchen (Bar) 14 CONISCLIFFE ROAD Coffee-shop bar with a nice enough roof terrace if the weather allows. Eat here if you wish, the crafted ales are in bottle and mostly can form in the fridges behind the services area which is a few metres into the building. |
70 /100 ORB (Bar) 28 CONISCLIFFE RD Split level micropub on the south-western side of town centre as the shops give way to residences. The bar is against the left wall on the lower level at the front. There's some seats in here and at the service area, with a greater amount available in the rear room. Has a row of very worthwhile cask ales at the bar with plenty of local options. Durham brewery featured twice on my visit. |
50 /100 Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum (Beer Store) STATION ROAD Directly north of the town centre, this museum venue provides a fine exhibition for steam train enthusiasts and is just about walkable. In the gift shop where you also pay to enter the museum they sell a couple of their own beers produced by Wylam Brewery. Sadly for me I got there just a week or so after it had opened for their summer season and they had not yet taken delivery of this year's bottles. |
54 /100 Britannia Inn (Bar) 1 ARCHER STREET Town centre pub slightly separated from the action by a busy road, with a pedestrian tunnel right in front of detached building providing the easiest access to the central doorway. Once inside the main room is to the left, with the bar against the inner wall once inside, with a plethora of cask ale pumps at its rear end, although mostly with very familiar cask ales. I did find one new locally produced beer here on the last pump. The decor isn't much to shout about but as a traditional urban pub it's friendly enough. |
50 /100 Darlington Snooker Club (Bar) 1 CORPORATION ROAD On the road directly north of the city centre, it's on the upper level of a building on the same side and about halfway on the way to the Railway museum from the centre. The winding staircase has several mobility lifts to get you up there, but they don't cover all the turns if you do! I read it's a members club with CAMRA members also welcome, but I got the impression most people can walk in anytime. Two cask ales from microbreweries were available on my visit, although not the best kept for me. The used clips on the walls suggests Yorkshire Dales brewery are well represented here throughout the year. I believe they also have a beer festival here at some point. |
62 /100 130 NORTHGATE One of the first buildings on the right just outside the central ring on the road directly north out of the town. It's a traditional urban pub, a little ragged around the edges from quite an old decor which still exists inside, but this is part of the charm. The door is on the right, and the large front room includes the bar which is against the right-hand wall. A long row of cask ales takes centre-stage here and it's a decent selection. As an ale house you don't want to miss this place on a tour of Darlington. |
60 /100 Hole in the Wall (Bar) 14 HORSEMARKET Opposite the Market Hall on the south side of the Market Square, this is a traditional pub with a large airy open front room with the bar running down the right hand wall. The venue is appealing but the drinks selection is very ordinary, although the not often seen John Smiths Magnet is in here, which was a new beer for me before entering the place, but not by the time I left! The half dozen cask ales here are popular ones with one local micropub represented on one of the wickets on my visit. |
70 /100 House of Hop (Bar) 4B HOUNDGATE End corner unit bar with a modern, somewhat late night revelling appearance, seating down its sides. The bar occupying the back wall has three ale pumps in the far corner and a lot more keg options covering the rest of it. |
56 /100 Hatch (Bar) 32 BLACKWELLGATE Tiny cafe at the end of a building at a fork where a pedestrian street meets the road. There's very limited space in here, and it doesn't feel like a natural place for drinking alcohol, but there's four craft keg ales available against the back wall with a very worthwhile selection on my visit. |
54 /100 Pennyweight (Bar) 8 BAKEHOUSE HILL Facing into the large square next to the Market Hall in the town centre, this chain style pub has quite a pleasant appeal to it, with different areas to sit in either side of a long central bar which isn't very deep into the building. It doesn't have the most eclectic range of beers on the bar, with a few cask ales I'd seen many times before, but a new beer on keg was found, and there's some local microbrewery bottles in one of the fridges behind the service area. |
56 /100 Forum Music Centre (Bar) 9 BOROUGH ROAD, A walk around the block from the Hippodrome on its railway side, once you get around to this building you'll find a buzzer system for entry. Once inside, the large ceiling open plan room immediately to your left includes a central bar against its window side, this is after an initial reception desk for the venue. There's a limited selection of drinks you don't see that often in here, but you'll probably find a couple of local microbrews on its handpumps. There's quite a lot of space in what is essentially a cafe-bar in a community centre. |
44 /100 Number One Bar (Bar) 1 SKINNERGATE Occupying an attractive corner unit in the town centre, its modern 'bar' look inside doesn't quite befit the exterior, but it's decent enough. There was hardly anybody in here on the Saturday afternoon I visited, just a couple of people eating at the tables by its large windows, but given the almost entirely macro selection of beers in here I would guess it does well from a younger party crowd in the evenings rather than those seeking an interesting new or local beer to taste. |
