COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When vikings weren’t drinking mead and pillaging, they would drink this high gravity smoked rye beer to kill time. Better that they were killing time than villagers. Our malt for gotlandsdricka is smoked over pear wood and then we add a bunch of honey to give it an extra kick in the skull.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2019 Taster pour on tap at Tapped, Maplewood. Appearance is clear, dark brown (sort of like root beer), no discernible sparkle, finger width beige head with decent retention. Aroma is nuts and caramel, not much smoke in the aroma. Taste is interesting mix of smoke, apple cider and caramel (like a caramel covered apple vs. pear). Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with thin, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, this is not heavily smoked like a rauchbier but is more subtle. Sweetness (from the honey, I would imagine) is evident. Alcohol well hidden. Different to say the least.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2019 It pours deep brown with a beige head. It has a medium body with semi sharp carbonation. The taste has toasted malt, juniper berries, woodiness, mild smoke and beautiful integration of everything as I'm coming to expect from Off Color. Well crafted.

tmoreau (9927) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - FEB 20, 2019
UPDATED: FEB 20, 2019 Shared, rep donated 8.5 oz. bottle poured to small snifters showing a hazed, brownish burgundy color, with a fair layer of off white froth, and spots of lacing. The nose was slightly floral, berries, honey sweetness, and a bit of woodiness. Light to medium bodied, with low carbonation, the taste was similar, with a hint of gin. Not much smokiness to speak of, unless you consider the noticeable band-aid note as such. Interesting concept, but didn't impress.

750 ml bottle- pours deep mahogany colour with mocha head. nose- smoke, spice and roast. taste- chewy smokey ,dark rye bread, chocolate, honey with a slight sour twang at the end. The alcohol is not noticeable except other than the warming in back of throat. very unique and quite tasty.

Pours a deep brown, almost black, with a full and thick tan head. The aroma is big on smoke with some roasted malt, oak, light chocolate, and light peat. The taste is sweet and has an easy bitterness. Its still plenty smoky and I do get the advertised honey and oak, though these two are merely secondary impressions. Following these are earthy malt elements, bread, peat, and a slight herbal touch. Short smoky finish. Medium in body, creamy in texture, and very soft, almost flat carbonation. This one is different than most of what you'll find. Its well worth trying just for the unusual style.

Shared with wombat23 and darbeer75. Pours from the bottle murky brown. Creamy head that turns thin. Aroma is smoke, salami, chocolate. Taste is smokey sweet, hints of molasses, chocolate, and smoked meat. Body is full, oily, carbonation is moderate. Complex and well balanced. A great introduction to the style.

darbeer75 (1301) - Round Rock, Texas, USA - SEP 23, 2017
Aroma: lots of smoke and some malt; Appearance: dark caramel/amber with thin white head that dissipates quickly; Taste: almost a belgian spice up front that ends with lots of smoke and peat; Palate: heavy body with long, smokey finish with some sweetness; Overall: a lightly smoked belgian ale. Decent.

This definitely has smoke to it, in both body and aroma. The flavor doesn’t come heavy on rye, which is nice. This doesn’t have any of the weird juniper flavors of the sahtis I had In Finland. Really makes me think of a smoked ale mostly.
