COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Road Dog was the first label Ralph Steadman designed which later inspired Hunter S. Thompson’s "Road Dog" essay. We then spent four years fighting for the right to display their now famous quote "Good Beer No Shit." To make a long story short, we won. Let us hoist a pint to free speech, NO CENSORSHIP, the genius of Ralph Steadman, and the Gonzo Spirit of Hunter S. Thompson!

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2020 12oz bottle from Vieux Carre Wines & Spirits, New Orleans, LA and drunk on 27/06/2008. A very nice, quite smooth Porter with moderate roasty flavours and a bit of hoppy bitternsss.

12 ounce bottle from the sampler case. Above average on all counts. Totally bizarre label that takes a lot of getting used to and ruins the experience of an otherwise calming porter.

MadRobin (3972) - Silver Spring, Maryland, USA - JUN 23, 2018
UPDATED: JUN 23, 2018 On tap at Gillys in Rockville, MD. Clear, but very dark rusty brown with a small khahi head and fair lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, bitter chocolate and tomatoes. Taste of dark chocolate, dark fruit, bread, cola and licorice. Medium/full body and medium carbonation. This needs to warm a little for the flavor to come out.

willisread (7331) - Detroit, Michigan, USA - JUN 6, 2018
UPDATED: JUN 6, 2018 Backlog rating. Multiple bottles from Old Town. Pours a deep brown with a finger of tan head that dissipates quickly. Dark baker's chocolate aromas with some light prune and roasted malt aromas. Chalky dark chocolate, lightly sour prune and more roasted malt. Body is think and easy drinking, but the flavors don't come together as good as most do for the style. Lingering roast on the finish.

After being sort of down on Flying Dog, I was expecting to not care for this much. Somebody had a variety pack at a camping trip and offered me a beer. This was the only one that interested me so I couldn't refuse. I know I bought the variety pack about 5-6 years ago, but couldn't remember what was in it so never got around to reviewing them, thus even more reason to try their porter again. The appearance was actually pretty decent....a dark brown near black. Not much aroma, which I find typical of most porters. I was hoping it would have a bit more flavor, but wasn't really expecting it to. Tastes of chocolate malts, slight coffee, enough hops to balance it out ok but a little light for a porter. I found this to be on the watery side, sort of like Yuengling's Porter, but for near-swill microbrew, an overall above average beer. I would recommend this as a "budget beer", but for what Flying Dog is charging can probably do better.

En god porter....men ikke meget porter over den. Den er som en porter, men desværre mangler bare smagen af det hele. Ikke at den er dårlig, den er måske en god "begynder-øl" ud i porter-verden.

Bottle split at LKS, thanks to Bropey, 03/08/15. Murky chestnut brown with a decent beige covering. Nose is soy sauce, bloody Mary, umame, dark fruit, touch of oxidisation. Taste comprises fruit loaf, light spice, earthy, toffee, malt, sweet. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Doing ok for a ’98 vintage.

Foam is present at the porter, but impressive is certainly not. The aroma is something special for type. Little malt and many floral notes. The taste nor as a conventional reports, rather something going towards a good dark sporter. It is too hard roasted malt, a little flower and a final hop bitterness is prolonged.

Bottle shared at Leighton’s place. Many thanks to Paul for this relic. Reddy caramel brown coloured pour with a fine cream coloured head. Aroma is fairly nice Salted caramel, toffee, soy, caramel, nutty. Flavour is composed of caramel, light toffee, Salted caramel, Good for the age. Palate is sweet, tangy, lowish carbonation, medium bodied. Powdered choc and fruit cake lingers.
