Whoever said you can’t have too much of a good thing was a seriously misdirected individual. Recently, Avery Brewing Company acquired a couple good things – making their good things even better. On a happy September day, two freshly welded, 130-barrel stainless steel fermentation vessels arrived in Boulder, Colo., from Summerland, British Columbia. Adam Avery had them custom-made by Ripley Stainless. And “custom-made” is an understatement. These things fit tighter than OJ Simpson’s gloves, within the building and their surroundings. Avery meticulously measured the space, maximizing it within inches, literally. When they were delivered, the skylight had to be removed for the crane to upright the tanks. Like lost and scared little children, these tanks found their home.

But they were still empty and hungry inside.
As I wedged my hand between two tanks (barely fitting), I could feel the energy as White Rascal’s yeast was mealing on sugar and rudely burping up carbon dioxide. The blow-off tube was as thick as a fire hose and it was blowing more than Debbie when she was in Dallas. White Rascal was the first Avery product to massage the virgin tank. The other tank will have the pleasure of experiencing Avery IPA in its maiden voyage.
Dual-handedly, these two new tanks will almost double Avery’s capacity, from about 6,000 barrels per year to about 10,000 barrels per year. Not only will it increase capacity, but it will also improve efficiency. “These tanks allow us to increase capacity on our current beers and give us room for new beers,” says Adam Avery.
Any new Avery beers on the horizon, you ask? The future is as wide as the Colorado sky. But, for now, allow your imagination and your taste buds to start salivating on the thought of The Beast.
