66 /100 White Lion (Greene King) (Bar) 46 HIGH STREET A pretty good GK pub in the middle of Baldock. It’s big and multi-room and, despite serving a basic menu, seems geared toward drinkers rather than diners. The real ale selection is a cut above what is normally offered at a Greene King establishment: two Oakham beers and one from the local-ish 3 Brewers were available as well as the three GK beers (the house one plus Yardbird and Olde Trip). Unfortunately they don’t do anything ’crafty’ on keg or bottle, so your options are limited. Still a neat find in an area which isn’t known for its forward-looking pubs, and worth trying en route to the Orange Tree. |
78 /100 Orange Tree (Bar) NORTON RD Large multi-room pub (a traditional public & lounge plus a function room, a small bar near the back, a large area with sofas and TV and a spacious outside seating area). Don’t let the Greene King frontage fool you, not only does the Orange Tree have bags of character but it has a decent choice of cask ale. On my visit there were 5 Mallinsons, a Wild Weather and a Hardknott in addition to the three compulsory Greene King beers and the ubiquitous Buntingford Twitchell. All beers I had were in great condition. Very popular even without Sky Sports (and Man U are playing tonight). No craft keg/bottle but they do have a few ciders. They have a few games, including a horseshoe pitch outside. Old-fashioned yet seems to cater for the needs of the community. Child and dog friendly. There’s food but it isn’t a ’food pub’, people come here to drink. A worthwhile place to spend some time. |
