76 /100 BUILDING CO WEST WALLS My favorite spot in Carlisle
Lovely cousy brew pub.
Not only their own beer on tap. Also a fine guest list
Only 10 min ish walk from the train station
Highly recommendable
Friendly helpful and knowledgable staff

74 /100 BrewDog Carlisle (Bar) 36-38 BOTCHERGATE Not a big surprise
But absolutely the best tap/bottle/can selection in Carlisle
Typical BD

|
46 /100 Caledonian (Bar) 17 BOTCHERGATE Cousy traditional pub close to the train station
But not really a beer destination
Football on tv
Better beer selection down the road
|
46 /100 Griffin (Bar) COURT SQUARE Large pub close to the train station
Not really a beer destination
Nice girls….
Better beer places around the corner
|
46 /100 Last Zebra (Restaurant) 6 LOWTHER STREET Nice bar in the city centre
Not that good beer selection.
Good burger meny though |
58 /100 Fat Gadgie (Bar) 5 DEVONSHIRE STREET Fair enough pub in the the city centre
But not really a beer destination
Not far from West Walls Brewery |
62 /100 11 DEVONSHIRE STREET A the moment more a party place for younger people
Not really a beer destination.
But absolutely a fine place for a couple of tick early on
Easy to find in the heart of the city
Not far away from West Walls Brewery

68 /100 William Rufus (JDW) (Bar) 10-16 BOTCHERGATE Bustling Wetherspoons very close to Carlisle railway station. Visited during Wetherspoons current Beer Festival. Good middle aged landlord who decided when serving me a beer, that it was not yet ready to go on. |
58 /100 William Rufus (JDW) (Bar) 10-16 BOTCHERGATE The scruffier of the two Carlisle spoons, better for real ales than the Woodrow Wilson. At least in here you are likely to find a local Cumbrian beer. |
24 /100 Last Zebra (Restaurant) 6 LOWTHER STREET Ventured in, not a great vibe and then the most disappointing part, the beer selection. Admittedly they did have one cask ale on but I'd drank it in another pub earlier on. As another member says, the beers are mostly of the commercial variety so of no interest to me. Left without making a purchase. |
58 /100 11 DEVONSHIRE STREET Modern bar foodie place, but two casks available, my pint of Loweswater Gold went down well and not badly priced. I can see this place attracting a younger, hipster demographic but I found it pleasant enough for a quick pint. |
8 /100 Howard Arms (Bar) 107 LOWTHER STREET Permanently closed as far as I could see. |
46 /100 King’s Head (Bar) FISHER STREET Positives: Traditional boozer, olde world feel to it.
Negatives: Three cask ales on, all 3.8 percent. Why three weak ales, I don't get it.
Conclusion: Would I return, only if they provided stronger ales, this is 2024 not the dark ages! |
72 /100 Woodrow Wilson (JDW) (Bar) 48 BOTCHERGATE A fairly large selection (12) of different ales in this Wetherspoon pub. |
62 /100 Howard Arms (Bar) 107 LOWTHER STREET Decent pub with a small range of ales |
68 /100 King’s Head (Bar) FISHER STREET Decent city centre pub with a good range of changing ales |
56 /100 BrewDog Carlisle (Bar) 36-38 BOTCHERGATE Hobbled in here after walking Hadrian's Wall from Newcastle. Typical Brewdog interior, the room heads deep into the back into some darkness with pool tables. Flights were on offer, with a sort of online ordering thing and it wasn't entirely clear if they preferred you to order from the table or go to the bar. Service was a little slow, which seems to be the norm these days. Otherwise I found some good beers here, standard Brewdog stuff but also some hyper obscure local things so it was worth a visit. |
72 /100 BrewDog Carlisle (Bar) 36-38 BOTCHERGATE Visited Sept 2020. A long rectangular bar decked out in Brewdog's usual industrial style. Around 15 to 20 taps, mostly the brewery's own own with a smattering of guest beers |
74 /100 Last Zebra (Restaurant) 6 LOWTHER STREET Visited July 2018. |
62 /100 Woodrow Wilson (JDW) (Bar) 48 BOTCHERGATE Visited July 2018. |
52 /100 Griffin (Bar) COURT SQUARE Visited July 2018. |
76 /100 BrewDog Carlisle (Bar) 36-38 BOTCHERGATE Visited 29/8/2019. Typical BrewDog really, but for this part of Carlisle it’s something of an up market enigma when compared to its neighbours. BrewDog beers of course dominate the taps, and whilst there’s a few guests I’ve seen better at others. 25ish cans/bottles. Very helpful service. Thursday in Carlisle appears to be party night but the place was much quieter than others nearby (though didn’t stop them cranking music volume up to the max!). |
72 /100 Woodrow Wilson (JDW) (Bar) 48 BOTCHERGATE Visited 29/8/2019. Ahead of visiting Carlisle I did wonder how the town sustained 2 JDW’s so close to one another. Having just visited both tonight I now get it - they couldn’t be much more different and are catering for very different clientele. This one had 10 cask ales available, of which 6 were from Cumbria. 3 Corby, 2 Hawkshead and Carlisle Flaxen. Nice vibe to it, no bouncers needed on the door (the crowd here being very different), and the service was great. Well above average ‘spoons experience.
|
46 /100 William Rufus (JDW) (Bar) 10-16 BOTCHERGATE Visited 29/8/2019. Typically busy ‘spoons, not a lot to offer. Heavy muscle on the door. Not the best ‘spoons in town. |
38 /100 Griffin (Bar) COURT SQUARE Visited 29/8/2019. Has a ‘spoons feel to it except with sports on big TV. 4 cask pumps but only one on from Greene King as were the bottles. Greene King Pub now it appears. Didn’t stay long. |
34 /100 Caledonian (Bar) 17 BOTCHERGATE Visited 29/8/2019. Locals sports bar. Nothing to be had here beer wise. |
74 /100 11 DEVONSHIRE STREET Visited 28/8/2019. Unlike some of the places nearby, this is worthy of a place on RateBeer. Only place in Carlisle I’ve seen a Carlisle brewery beer (though sadly I’d had it already) and their other tap was Cumbrian too (ditto) but they also have a fridge with 7-8 Hawkshead beers. The highest number of Cumbrian beers I’ve seen in one place. Very good service and good food too. Liked it here. |
52 /100 Last Zebra (Restaurant) 6 LOWTHER STREET Visited 28/8/2019. I’m not a fan of the animal skin decor but the one cask (of 4 pumps) they had on was from Cumbria (a new brewery for me), so I averted my eyes and got my rate. Otherwise I’d have left as the 11 other taps and bottles they have are all very commercial. It’s an eclectic place, part wine bar, part restaurant, part animal mortuary, putting on a vibe music wise, but it’s not a beer destination (the one cask exception aside). Good service though - and I got my half in a dimpled mug without asking! |
80 /100 Fat Gadgie (Bar) 5 DEVONSHIRE STREET Visited 28/8/2019. Best place in Carlisle (so far). Has been open a couple of years. Good range of local beers on cask and keg supplemented by some other decent stuff on tap and a fridge with 20+ craft beers from UK/Belgium etc. Good service. Thirds available. Keen prices (£3.55 for 3 cask thirds). Nice friendly crowd. Very much enjoyed this visit. Playing good music too (Echo & The Bunnymen, Placebo, Fleetwood Mac, Floyd etc). |
64 /100 King’s Head (Bar) FISHER STREET Visited 28/8/2019. Nice old pub from 1700 something. 5 cask pumps, 4 in use, 2 from Cumbrian Legendary Ales (yeah!) and 2 from further afield. Crap kegs and bottles, commercial lagers and Guinness. Decent service and best prices seen so far. |
62 /100 Howard Arms (Bar) 107 LOWTHER STREET Visited 28/8/2019. Nice pub, good service, 2 Theakstons, a Sharps and 1 other casks, but nothing local available. Four cask pumps, and a few uninteresting kegs. To be fair the Theakstons was served very well but wasn’t what I was looking for. |
52 /100 Local (Beer Store) 108 ENGLISH STREET Visited 28/8/2019. Only local beers was they had Hesket Newmarket beers (5 in total), nothing else of interest. But seems to be the best selection in town! When I was last in Carlisle about 7 years ago there was a really good place for local bottles but that seems long gone. |
40 /100 Local (Beer Store) 108 ENGLISH STREET Not much to choose from on a few shelves with bottled beers. We found only a couple of beers from regional breweries. Central location and polite service. (Visited with Finn 08.02.2019). |
56 /100 William Rufus (JDW) (Bar) 10-16 BOTCHERGATE A spacious L shaped room, and long bar to the left. Bear garden at the rear of room. Around the corner when walking out of the train station. Eight cask ales. Good valued and tasty traditional English breakfast after a long train journey. Polite service. (Visited with Finn 08.02.2019). |
44 /100 Local (Beer Store) 108 ENGLISH STREET Tiny shop with limited beer selection. |
66 /100 11 DEVONSHIRE STREET Visited July 2018. Last stop on the Carlisle tour. Smaller gastro pub, not the biggest selection of beers. Seatings both inside as outside.. They do food but we didn't have any.. worth a go to visit this place being in Carlisle.. |
58 /100 Caledonian (Bar) 17 BOTCHERGATE Visited July 2018.. Traditionel old style town pub.. seemed like a place locals seniors shows up this Tuesday noon we had a look. Not the largest selection of beers.. |
74 /100 Last Zebra (Restaurant) 6 LOWTHER STREET Visited July 2018. Spacy one room gastro pub.. Easy to find, short walk from the station.. Friendly service and beers served in good condition.. They do food but we didn't have any.. Free WiFi |
60 /100 William Rufus (JDW) (Bar) 10-16 BOTCHERGATE Visited July 2018. Spacy JDW with a good number of tables.. Clean and with a welcoming atmosphere.. Friendly service. Not the biggest selection of beers when we visited.. |
62 /100 Woodrow Wilson (JDW) (Bar) 48 BOTCHERGATE Visited July 2018. Large JDW, lots of seating.. with ok space in between the tables. Clean and a welcoming atmosphere.. Modern style bar area. Ok selection of beers.. Friendly service.. |
66 /100 Griffin (Bar) COURT SQUARE Visited July 2018. Placed just outside the train station, easy to find. Huge spacious pub, 2 levels.. Nice welcoming atmosphere.. Lots of seatings, nice and clean.. They do breakfast. Friendly service.. |
